Ebb and Flow: Coastal Serenity Meets Urban Sophistication

Michael Tu’s award-winning interior design reimagines luxury living in Kaohsiung

Inspired by the seamless convergence of ocean and city in Kaohsiung, Michael Tu’s Ebb and Flow project transforms residential interiors into immersive works of art, blending maritime tranquility with contemporary elegance.

Located along the vibrant edge of Kaohsiung Harbor, Ebb and Flow draws on the rhythmic movement of coastal landscapes to create a harmonious living environment. The design’s open-plan layout, spanning approximately 611 square meters, maximizes natural light and spatial fluidity. Gentle curves and layered materials echo the organic forms of waves, while sculptural walls and reflective surfaces evoke the shimmering quality of water. This interplay of elements fosters a seamless dialogue between nature and urban sophistication, elevating the everyday experience of luxury living.

Central to the project’s uniqueness is its innovative use of materiality and form. The living room and master bedroom feature wall is crafted from CNC-milled solid timber, meticulously finished through a multi-layered skim coating and hand-polishing process. This technique achieves a flawless matte alabaster surface, ensuring both visual depth and tactile refinement. In the dining area, custom architectural paneling integrates recessed LED cove lighting, engineered with advanced photometric analysis to provide soft, indirect illumination without visible light sources. These details exemplify the project’s commitment to both artistry and technical precision.

The selection of materials—including deep-toned leather, natural stone, and titanium-plated accents—creates striking contrasts that enhance the sense of movement and depth within the space. Advanced lighting calculations and precision-crafted architectural forms further reinforce the design’s dynamic yet serene atmosphere. According to the design team, these choices were informed by extensive research into how spatial flow and materiality influence perception and emotional comfort in luxury environments.

Realizing the fluid spatial concepts of Ebb and Flow presented significant creative and technical challenges. The team employed 3D modeling, digital fabrication, and on-site prototyping to refine curved forms and ensure seamless integration of bespoke elements. Collaboration with artisans and future residents allowed for the development of custom finishes, such as hand-applied fabric panels and titanium detailing, which contribute to the project’s immersive quality and emotional resonance.

Ebb and Flow’s success has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The project stands as a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design, demonstrating how the convergence of coastal aesthetics and urban structure can redefine luxury living for a new era.

By harmonizing the tranquility of nature with the energy of city life, Michael Tu’s Ebb and Flow offers a refined vision of residential interiors—one where every detail is crafted to inspire awe, comfort, and a profound sense of place.
