128 Bpm, a gin packaging design by Chilean designer Ximena Ureta, draws its inspiration from the evocative world of Blues music. The project’s concept is rooted in the tempo that defines both music and the human heartbeat, specifically the 128 beats per minute that symbolize joy and harmony. This unique approach is further enriched by a specially composed Blues track, “Gin Blues,” created at the same tempo, establishing a direct link between sound and sensation.
The design stands apart through its thoughtful integration of musical symbolism and visual storytelling. The number 128 Bpm is not arbitrary; it represents a tempo that aligns with the rhythm of a happy heart, often considered the perfect pace for musical mixing. The packaging’s blue hues pay homage to the Blues genre, while illustrated wings and birds symbolize creative freedom and the migration of music through time. These birds also serve as collectors of botanicals, reflecting the essence of gin-making and the journey of flavor.
Technically, the packaging showcases advanced printing techniques and premium materials. The front and back labels are crafted from self-adhesive Fasson Cotton White paper, known for its velvety, tactile finish and moisture resistance. Digital printing on HP Indigo machines, combined with gold foil accents, glossy varnish, and intricate embossing, results in a luxurious and durable presentation. The collar, printed on Cuvee Collier paper, features semi-gloss varnish and precise die-cut finishing, further elevating the design’s sophistication.
Research for 128 Bpm delved into the roots of Blues and its influence on modern music genres, as well as the iconic instruments associated with the style. The guitar motif, inspired by the D’Angelico Deluxe in blue, reinforces the connection between music and packaging. The design’s narrative is further enhanced by the symbolism of wings and birds, representing both the evolution of Blues and the artistry involved in gin creation.
Launched in Chile on September 4, 2024, and featured in Contraseña Magazine as well as Print Santiago 2024, 128 Bpm has garnered international recognition. The design was awarded the prestigious Golden A’ Packaging Design Award in 2025, celebrating its outstanding creativity, technical excellence, and cultural impact. The collaborative effort behind the project includes art direction by Ximena Ureta, illustration by Benjamin Dieguez, and music by Sebastián Prado, among others.
128 Bpm exemplifies how design can bridge the worlds of music, art, and lifestyle, offering a sensory experience that resonates with both connoisseurs and casual enthusiasts. This innovative packaging invites audiences to appreciate the rhythm of life, one sip at a time.
