Maples Workout stands out as an educational storybook that addresses the emotional challenges children face during frequent medical appointments. Inspired by the need for relatable resources, Bruno Oro developed this project to support young readers, particularly those with disabilities such as cerebral palsy. The story follows Maple, a teddy bear, as he embarks on fun exercises, transforming the rehabilitation journey into an approachable and enjoyable experience. By collaborating with healthcare professionals and drawing on user experience research, the book ensures both accuracy and comfort for its audience.
The design process for Maples Workout was rooted in user-centered methodologies. Workshops with children and parents provided valuable insights into their fears and needs, shaping the narrative and visual elements of the book. Iterative prototyping and feedback loops refined the story and illustrations, resulting in vibrant, child-friendly pages produced through a combination of digital and traditional printing techniques. The final product is a 10 by 8-inch hardcover, crafted to withstand frequent use while captivating young readers.
What distinguishes Maples Workout is its unique approach to pediatric rehabilitation. Rather than presenting medical procedures as daunting, the storybook frames them as part of an adventure, making the process less intimidating. Children are encouraged to identify with Maple, participating in playful exercises and learning about rehabilitation in a supportive context. This design not only reduces anxiety but also fosters a positive mindset, encouraging cooperation and participation in the healing process.
Research conducted during the development of Maples Workout revealed that engaging, relatable resources significantly ease children’s fears in healthcare settings. Qualitative methods, including interviews and observations, highlighted the importance of comfort and understanding in clinical environments. The findings underscore the impact of thoughtful design on both societal awareness and healthcare delivery, promoting emotional support and disability awareness among young audiences.
Maples Workout has received notable recognition, winning the Silver A' Social Design Award in 2025. This accolade celebrates its outstanding expertise, technical excellence, and innovative approach to improving children’s experiences in healthcare. By blending storytelling, design, and empathy, Bruno Oro’s project sets a new standard for educational resources in pediatric rehabilitation, inspiring both children and professionals to view medical journeys as opportunities for growth and adventure.
