Zilli: Reviving Anatolian Weaving with Contemporary Flair

Begum Karadag’s rug blends heritage techniques with modern design sensibility

Zilli, designed by Begum Karadag, breathes new life into the centuries-old Karacakilavuz Weaving Technique from Tekirdag, Turkey, merging tradition with postmodern artistry to create a unique, sustainable floor rug.

The Karacakilavuz Weaving Technique, geographically marked and deeply rooted in Tekirdag’s cultural heritage, serves as the foundation for Zilli. This technique, once at risk of fading into obscurity, is meticulously revived in Karadag’s design. Zilli distinguishes itself by faithfully employing the original weaving method and motifs, which symbolize fertility and the dualities of life—both bitter and sweet. The rug’s creation is not only a tribute to historical craftsmanship but also an innovative reinterpretation for contemporary interiors.

What sets Zilli apart is its seamless blend of tradition and modernity. The rug is hand-woven using the authentic Karacakilavuz technique, with motifs embroidered during the weaving process via the Cicim Technique—eschewing any post-processing. This approach preserves the integrity of the craft while introducing postmodern lines and a fresh aesthetic. Each motif carries a distinct meaning, such as the horseshoe for union, dog paw for happiness, scorpion for protection, clover for luck, and cocklebur for abundance, all of which are geographically significant.

The production process is a testament to sustainable and artisanal values. Crafted in Buruz’s workshop in Tekirdag, the rug utilizes four-pedal oak looms and natural materials, including vegetable-dyed wool and undyed cotton warp threads. The assembly involves three separately woven pieces, joined asymmetrically with a knitted wool chain and finished with hand-attached fringes. A cotton lining ensures durability and comfort, while the meticulous handwork highlights the skill and dedication of local artisans, particularly women employed through this initiative.

Zilli’s design is inherently exclusive, produced only in limited editions upon request. Its dimensions—240 cm by 280 cm by 1 cm—may vary slightly due to the handmade nature of each piece, and custom sizes are available. The rug’s creation, spanning approximately one month, is a collaborative effort rooted in research and direct engagement with local communities, drawing inspiration from historical weavings and traditional stories.

Recognized for its cultural and creative significance, Zilli was awarded the Bronze A’ Design Award in 2025 in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry category. The project not only preserves a vital aspect of Anatolian heritage but also champions sustainable practices and women’s employment, making it a meaningful addition to any modern living space.

Zilli stands as a vibrant example of how traditional crafts can be revitalized for contemporary lifestyles, offering both aesthetic appeal and cultural depth. Collectors and design enthusiasts seeking authenticity and artistry will find Zilli a compelling choice that honors the past while embracing the future.
