Batumi Chess Palace: A Modern Icon for Chess Enthusiasts

Alpha Architecture’s striking cultural center celebrates chess in Batumi, Georgia

Inspired by the timeless game of chess, the Batumi Chess Palace by Irakli Emiridze - Alpha Architecture reimagines a cultural landmark that fuses art, architecture, and community in the heart of Georgia’s Black Sea city.

Batumi Chess Palace stands as a testament to the enduring influence of chess on culture and design. Drawing direct inspiration from the chessboard’s iconic grid, the building’s form unfolds as a dynamic architectural statement. The black and white facade, reminiscent of chess squares, is more than a visual motif—it is a rhythmic interplay of light and shadow, brought to life by perforated solar shades that animate each facade throughout the day. A sculptural chess piece at the entrance marks the transition from the city into a world dedicated to the game, reinforcing the palace’s symbolic and functional significance.

Alpha Architecture’s vision extends beyond aesthetics, positioning the Chess Palace as a premier destination for chess lovers worldwide. The center is designed to host international tournaments, educational programs, and cultural events, featuring a tournament hall, study rooms, a chess library, exhibition spaces, and even hotel accommodations. This multifaceted approach aims to foster chess tourism and generate positive cultural and economic impacts for Batumi and the wider region.

Technically, the project employs innovative materials and construction techniques. The facade utilizes ventilated HPL panels for durability and energy efficiency, while the roof’s metal substructure and glass-covered winter garden introduce contemporary elements. The use of artificial green carpet and stained glass walls further enhances the building’s unique character, blending modernity with playful references to the chessboard’s landscape.

Alpha Architecture’s design process was rooted in research and competition, with the studio winning a governmental contest to realize this vision. The primary challenge was to embody the essence of chess within the structure, ensuring the building’s large scale harmonizes with its urban surroundings. The result is a landmark that not only serves its functional purpose but also becomes a symbol of Batumi’s commitment to cultural innovation.

Recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, the Batumi Chess Palace exemplifies how architecture can celebrate tradition while embracing contemporary needs. As its completion approaches in 2027, the palace is set to become a beacon for chess enthusiasts and a catalyst for cultural exchange in Georgia.

With its thoughtful integration of form, function, and symbolism, the Batumi Chess Palace demonstrates how design can elevate a city’s identity and inspire a global community.
