Charis: Blending Tradition and Modernity in Interior Design

Hiroki Takahashi’s Charis harmonizes natural materials with Japanese craftsmanship.

Charis, an interior space by Hiroki Takahashi, exemplifies a sophisticated fusion of traditional Japanese artistry and contemporary design, creating a unique aesthetic balance that redefines modern living environments.

Charis stands as a testament to the power of material harmony, where stone, wood, and metal converge to create an atmosphere of warmth, luxury, and modern elegance. Inspired by the textures and colors of natural materials, Hiroki Takahashi sought to balance the organic warmth of wood and stone with the sleek, cool impression of metal. This thoughtful combination results in an interior that feels both inviting and refined, appealing to those who appreciate the intersection of tradition and innovation.

Central to Charis is the use of kumiko, a traditional Japanese woodworking technique known for its intricate geometric patterns. These delicate woodworks not only evoke a sense of history and culture but also cast dynamic shadows that add movement and depth to the space. The integration of Sicilian marble and Patagonian granite further elevates the interior, introducing elements of global craftsmanship while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. Metallic accents and glassware reflect subtle light, infusing the environment with a gentle sparkle and enhancing the overall visual experience.

The realization of Charis relied heavily on advanced technology and meticulous research. CAD software played a crucial role in simulating the interplay of materials and light, ensuring both visual harmony and functional excellence. The design process involved multiple iterations to achieve the perfect balance between traditional beauty and modern practicality. The result is a space that not only meets professional standards but also offers a sense of fulfillment and well-being to its occupants.

Spanning 340.96 square meters, Charis is scheduled for completion in September 2024 in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. The project’s ambition to blend different regional materials and crafts presented unique challenges, particularly in achieving a harmonious aesthetic balance. Through careful selection and integration, the design successfully unites Sicilian marble, Patagonian granite, and Japanese kumiko, demonstrating the potential of cross-cultural collaboration in interior architecture.

Charis has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, honoring its innovative approach and technical excellence. The award celebrates designs that not only fulfill industry requirements but also contribute positively to the built environment. Charis leaves a lasting impression, inviting visitors to experience a space where tradition and modernity coexist in perfect harmony.

By merging the precision of Japanese craftsmanship with the durability of stone and the sleekness of metal, Charis offers a new perspective on interior design—one that values both heritage and progress, and sets a new standard for sophisticated living spaces.
