Ori: Origami-Inspired Floor Lamp by Lincoln Chen

Minimalist lighting design merges elegance with eco-friendly innovation

Inspired by Japanese origami, Lincoln Chen’s Ori floor lamp reimagines lighting with sustainable materials and minimalist aesthetics, offering a refined solution for modern interiors.

Ori stands as a testament to the power of simplicity in design. Drawing from the ancient Japanese art of origami, Lincoln Chen crafted this floor lamp from a single sheet of recyclable aluminum, demonstrating how thoughtful folds can transform flat material into a striking three-dimensional form. The name “Ori,” meaning “folding” in Japanese, reflects both the lamp’s inspiration and its construction method, resulting in a piece that is as visually engaging as it is functional.

One of Ori’s most distinctive features is its seamless, reverse-folded top, which elegantly forms the lampshade without the need for welding. This design choice not only enhances the lamp’s aesthetic appeal but also supports sustainability by simplifying manufacturing and reducing material waste. Measuring 35 inches in height with a compact footprint, Ori delivers ample, glare-free illumination ideal for reading, while its lightweight structure allows for easy repositioning within any living space.

The production process utilizes 9-gauge 5052 aluminum alloy, shaped through precise sheet metal stamping. This approach ensures both durability and efficiency, making Ori suitable for large-scale production and easy transport. Lincoln Chen’s research involved extensive experimentation with high-GSM paper models, optimizing the lamp’s form to balance stability, minimal material use, and manufacturing simplicity.

Ori’s design journey was not without challenges. Achieving the desired elegance and minimalism required careful consideration of material properties and fabrication techniques. The adaptation of origami principles to metalwork demanded innovative thinking, particularly in ensuring the lamp’s folded structure provided both visual interest and practical stability. The result is a floor lamp that departs from conventional geometric styles, offering a unique blend of aesthetics and function.

Recognized for its excellence, Ori was awarded the Silver A’ Design Award in 2025, highlighting its outstanding creativity, technical mastery, and artistic skill. This accolade underscores the lamp’s ability to evoke amazement and wonder while introducing a positive, sustainable approach to contemporary lighting design.

Ori exemplifies how traditional art forms can inspire modern innovation, setting a new standard for eco-friendly and elegant lighting solutions in today’s interiors.
