Life Science Code: A Monument to Human Genome Art

Takumi Takahashi’s creation celebrates the mysteries of life and science.

This monumental artwork at Chugai’s Life Science Park in Kanagawa, Japan, embodies the profound beauty and complexity of life through the lens of genomic science, blending natural and human-made materials to inspire researchers and visitors alike.

Takumi Takahashi, in collaboration with HAKUTEN and a multidisciplinary team, designed the Life Science Code monument as a tribute to the intricate mysteries of life science. Drawing inspiration from the human genome, the monument visually encodes the patterns of DNA, symbolizing evolution, memory, and the very essence of humanity. The design reflects the ongoing revolution in drug creation, where genomic analysis unlocks new possibilities for improving human health.

Standing at 6 meters long, 1.5 meters wide, and 2.2 meters high, the monument integrates ancient stones, local flora, medicinal herbs, and native trees. Its transparent stone base, internally illuminated, evokes water as the origin of life and highlights the monument’s DNA-inspired motifs. The use of both natural and crafted materials—wood and metal scraps repurposed into furniture and structural elements—demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and circular design.

The monument’s unique landscape juxtaposes memories from nature, technology, and culture, inviting viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of life. Researchers and visitors become part of the artwork, their reflections merging with the monument’s surface, symbolizing the present moment and the ongoing accumulation of human knowledge. This interactive quality aims to inspire those working at the forefront of life sciences, reminding them of the unseen wonders within their research.

Underlying the design is a deep exploration of inherited memories, both human and earthly. The team meticulously researched and selected materials that represent the passage of time, the evolution of culture, and the legacy of scientific discovery. The monument’s realization required overcoming technical and creative challenges, particularly in harmonizing disparate materials and ensuring the piece would serve as a lasting source of inspiration rather than a commercial product.

Life Science Code has been recognized with the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in Fine Arts and Art Installation Design for 2025. This accolade honors its transcendent excellence, innovation, and contribution to advancing the boundaries of art, science, and technology. The monument stands not only as a testament to the mysteries of life but also as a beacon for future generations of researchers and creators.

By encapsulating the memory of life through the universal language of DNA, Takumi Takahashi’s monument at Chugai’s Life Science Park invites all who encounter it to contemplate the origins, potential, and enduring enigma of life itself.
