Melty: Sculptural Glass Jars Redefine Tabletop Style

Melty stands out as a collection of glass storage jars that transform everyday presentation into an artistic statement. Designed by Tulin Atamer, the jars draw inspiration from the organic movement of melting and flowing, resulting in sculptural handles that captivate with their vibrant colors and unique shapes. The project’s journey began in Istanbul in August 2023, culminating in March 2024 after extensive research and experimentation with materials and production techniques.

The defining feature of Melty is its combination of transparent glass jars with acrylic lids, each adorned with handles crafted from polyester. These handles, painted with automotive acrylic paint, offer a glossy, smooth finish that enhances their visual appeal. Unlike conventional jars, Melty’s handles are mounted with screws rather than glue, ensuring durability and a seamless connection between the components. This innovative approach not only highlights the sculptural quality of the handles but also addresses practical concerns of mass production and longevity.

Each jar in the Melty collection is handmade and available in four distinct sizes, ranging from 10 to 20 centimeters in diameter, with handles offered in nine different colors and models. The ergonomic design of the handles ensures ease of use, allowing for comfortable gripping and effortless lid removal. This thoughtful integration of form and function reflects Atamer’s commitment to both aesthetic innovation and user experience.

The development process involved meticulous research into suitable materials, with polyester chosen for its durability and adaptability to mass production. The handles were initially shaped by hand using ceramic paste, then replicated through silicone molds to achieve consistency. The final painting technique, using auto acrylic paint, was selected for its ability to deliver a flawless, shiny surface—a challenge that required multiple layers of sanding and varnishing to perfect.

Melty’s recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025 underscores its success as a practical yet imaginative creation. The award celebrates designs that integrate industry best practices with technical excellence, and Melty exemplifies this by offering a product that is both visually striking and highly functional. As a result, Melty not only elevates the act of serving and storing but also contributes to a more beautiful and expressive home environment.
