Panpan’s limited edition gift box, designed by Wu Yao and a talented creative team, stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of Eastern and Western aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from classical Chinese food containers and the Chinoiserie style that captivated Europe in the 18th century, the box elegantly merges iconic Chinese and French landmarks with the brand’s own visual identity. The curved opening line, reminiscent of a ribbon, not only echoes the Panpan logo but also visually connects the two cultures depicted in the illustrations.
This commemorative box was created to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, serving as a souvenir for Panpan’s new product launch in Paris. The design incorporates both brand products and carefully selected gifts, making it a cherished keepsake. The attention to detail is evident in the materials and techniques used: sturdy cardboard forms the base, while a gold medal on the front and a limited edition plate on the back add a touch of luxury. Hot stamping brings the illustrations to life, and gold paper embossing of wheat and bamboo motifs further enriches the tactile experience.
Functionality meets artistry in the box’s construction. The curved lines divide the illustration, allowing for greater detail and visual storytelling. The flip lid, secured by magnets, ensures both ease of use and a premium unboxing experience. Measuring 105mm x 245mm x 335mm, the box is both practical and visually striking, embodying the spirit of cross-cultural celebration.
Research for this project focused on capturing the essence of both Chinese and French aesthetics. The design team faced the challenge of balancing these elements while maintaining the brand’s premium positioning, especially for a consumer base in emerging markets. The Chinoiserie style, with its ornate blend of East and West, proved to be the ideal solution, offering a decorative richness that aligns with Panpan’s brand values.
The Panpan gift box has been recognized with a Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, a testament to its creative ingenuity and technical excellence. By integrating art, science, and cultural storytelling, the design not only elevates packaging standards but also serves as a symbolic bridge, fostering greater understanding and appreciation between China and France.
This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can celebrate heritage, promote cultural exchange, and enhance the everyday experience of gifting.
