Located on the tranquil north shore of Qionghai Sea, the Xichang Joyhub Air Hotel is conceived as an upscale leisure destination. The design draws inspiration from the region’s rich cultural legacy, seamlessly integrating elements of Western Sichuan residential architecture with innovative construction techniques. This approach ensures that the hotel not only preserves local charm but also introduces a fresh perspective to hospitality design.
Spanning approximately 22,000 square meters, the resort combines accommodation, dining, conference, and wellness facilities within a meticulously planned landscape. The collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team, including Ivy Zhu, Lynne Zhang, Polina Chen, Jelena Hus, Muyi, Moye Hu, and Panda, have resulted in a holistic environment that prioritizes both guest comfort and environmental stewardship.
Material selection plays a pivotal role in shaping the hotel’s serene atmosphere. Artistic paint, wood-printed aluminum panels, stone, and wood finishes are thoughtfully used to evoke tranquility. The open courtyard, adorned with tranquil stones and lush plants, creates a Zen-inspired retreat, while structures reminiscent of bamboo weaving offer privacy and visual interest. Interior spaces reinterpret traditional elements such as grey bricks, pitched roofs, and rammed earth walls, blending them with light-toned finishes and deep-hued marble for a harmonious ambiance.
The lighting design further enhances the hotel’s connection to nature. Subtle horizontal lines and point lights outline the buildings at night, maintaining a minimalist aesthetic that complements the surrounding landscape. This careful illumination fosters a peaceful atmosphere, inviting guests to unwind and reconnect with their environment.
Addressing the challenges of wetland conservation, the design team collaborated with environmental experts to preserve existing trees and promote plant diversity. Layered landscaping and climate-sensitive choices ensure that the hotel respects the local ecosystem while offering a distinctive visual identity. This commitment to sustainability, combined with a poetic approach to living, has earned the Xichang Joyhub Air Hotel the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its contribution to advancing the boundaries of art, science, and hospitality.
The Xichang Joyhub Air Hotel exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge tradition and innovation, creating a luxurious yet environmentally conscious retreat. Its success sets a new standard for hospitality projects seeking to honor local culture while embracing the future of sustainable living.
