Ancient Elegance: Lu Yinpiaolaohao Baijiu Packaging

Sinong Wu’s design blends Ming Dynasty artistry with modern sustainability.

Sinong Wu’s award-winning packaging for Lu Yinpiaolaohao Baijiu draws inspiration from the grandeur of classical Chinese architecture, offering a sensory journey through history and culture.

The Lu Yinpiaolaohao Baijiu packaging, designed by Sinong Wu, stands as a testament to the rich heritage of Shanxi Province, one of China’s most significant cradles of baijiu culture. Drawing from over 500 years of history, the design pays homage to the Ming Dynasty, incorporating elements reminiscent of ancient Chinese architecture and furniture. The bottle cap, shaped to evoke the peaks of Taihang Mountain, serves as a miniature tribute to the region’s natural beauty, while the box design features motifs such as a Ming-era poster and a retro seal character font, enhancing the sense of antiquity and authenticity.

Unique features distinguish this packaging from conventional designs. The left side of the box showcases what may be the earliest known baijiu poster, highlighting the distillery’s location and product quality. The right side presents the Chinese brand character “HONGJI” in a stylized, window-cut form, referencing traditional Shanxian aesthetics. The bottle itself, inspired by Ming Dynasty blue and white porcelain, subtly reveals its contents, reflecting the elegance and mystery of classical China. This interplay of historical references and visual storytelling creates a product that appeals both to the palate and the eye.

Environmental consciousness is central to the realization of this design. Two production processes were developed: a recyclable cardboard and wood grain paper version for mass production, and a limited-edition solid wood carved box reserved for contributors and special occasions. Both versions incorporate zinc alloy metal plates crafted with advanced printing and dropper technology, while the ceramic bottle is produced through high-temperature firing, ensuring durability and a refined finish.

Functionality and sustainability are further emphasized in the design’s interaction. After the original baijiu is consumed, the bottle can be reused for other beverages or repurposed as a decorative storage container. This approach not only extends the product’s lifecycle but also encourages consumers to appreciate the artistry and cultural significance embedded in the packaging.

The design process involved extensive research into Shanxi’s regional culture, with particular attention paid to the symbolism of Taihang Mountain and the aesthetics of traditional Chinese symmetry. Overcoming the challenge of integrating diverse cultural elements, Sinong Wu focused on architectural and furniture motifs to create a distinctly Oriental visual identity. The result is a packaging solution that exudes antique charm, classical beauty, and a deep sense of place.

Recognized with the prestigious Golden A’ Packaging Design Award in 2025, the Lu Yinpiaolaohao Baijiu packaging exemplifies how art, history, and innovation can converge to elevate everyday objects into works of cultural significance. This design not only preserves the legacy of Chinese baijiu but also invites a global audience to experience the elegance of Eastern classical aesthetics.
