Bamboo Weaving Meets Modern Salt Storage in Coastal Bam

Liang Hou’s salt jar fuses tradition, sustainability, and innovation for coastal kitchens.

Inspired by southeastern China’s fishing heritage, Coastal Bam reimagines salt storage with eco-friendly bamboo weaving and advanced metalwork, offering a sustainable solution rooted in local culture.

Coastal Bam, designed by Liang Hou and team, is a salt jar that addresses the unique needs of Chinese coastal communities. Drawing inspiration from traditional fishermen’s practices, the design supports the sustainable collection of brine from deliquescent coarse salt—a process essential for preparing tofu and soy products. The jar’s form and function reflect a deep respect for regional customs, blending practical utility with cultural symbolism.

What sets Coastal Bam apart is its dual bamboo weaving filters, crafted using time-honored techniques from the region. These filters, combined with a corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy vessel, ensure both durability and hygiene. The bamboo’s natural flexibility and rapid renewability make it an environmentally conscious choice, while the jar’s open-mouth design allows for easy hand access, echoing local habits and Feng Shui traditions.

The creation of Coastal Bam involved a meticulous combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. The bamboo weaving, featuring hexagonal holes and cross weaving, enhances both air permeability and filtration efficiency. Precise CNC processing seamlessly integrates the bamboo with the metal bottle, resulting in a product that is both robust and refined. The technical specifications—such as a 300 ml capacity and carefully calibrated filter apertures—underscore the thoughtful engineering behind the design.

Field research played a crucial role in shaping the final product. Ethnographic studies revealed the importance of tactile, organic materials and the need for effective brine filtration in fishermen’s daily routines. Overcoming the challenges of mastering various bamboo weaving methods, Liang Hou collaborated with local artisans to ensure authenticity and craftsmanship. The result is a jar that not only meets practical needs but also honors intangible cultural heritage.

Since its completion in 2024, Coastal Bam has garnered significant recognition, including the prestigious Red Dot Design Award and an Iron A' Design Award for its innovative approach and cultural resonance. Showcased at the Red Dot Museum in Singapore, the design stands as a testament to the power of merging tradition with modernity, offering a model for sustainable kitchenware that enriches daily life while preserving regional identity.

Coastal Bam demonstrates how thoughtful design can bridge the gap between past and present, providing coastal communities with a tool that is as meaningful as it is functional. Through the integration of local materials, artisanal techniques, and contemporary technology, the project sets a new standard for sustainable and culturally relevant kitchenware.
