Yunhai Shimen stands as a striking new landmark in Quzhou’s Qujiang District, conceived by Minquan Wang to invigorate the city’s industrial and economic landscape. The project’s design echoes the region’s celebrated mountains and clouds, featuring a composition of geometric towers and cascading platforms that break away from traditional, monolithic retail complexes. This approach not only enhances the city’s skyline but also creates a dynamic stage for urban life and public events.
Central to Yunhai Shimen’s uniqueness is its open, interconnected structure. Unlike conventional podiums, the development unfolds into a series of outdoor platforms that extend the building’s civic functions beyond its walls. These platforms, together with the “Cloud Deck” gallery and sky lobbies crowning each tower, form a multi-level public space system. This design encourages social interaction and accommodates events of various scales, from intimate gatherings to large performances, making the complex a focal point for community engagement.
The realization of Yunhai Shimen relies on advanced construction technologies. The main structure utilizes reinforced concrete, while the central Cloud Deck is supported by a steel moment frame. The towers’ curtain walls feature insulated, low-e laminated glass with hidden ventilation, ensuring both energy efficiency and aesthetic clarity. Exterior cladding combines anodized aluminium, stainless steel, and granite, reflecting a commitment to durability and visual harmony.
Spanning a site area of over 27,000 square meters, Yunhai Shimen integrates diverse functions: headquarters, rental offices, apartments, and a retail podium, all within a 75-meter-high structure. With 895 parking slots and 230 apartment units, the development supports both business and residential communities. The design’s flexibility allows for seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, maximizing the potential for public use while adhering to planning and zoning requirements.
The project’s conceptual foundation is rooted in thorough research of Quzhou’s cultural and geographical context. By aligning the development with adjacent parks, urban amenities, and masterplanning motifs, Minquan Wang ensures that Yunhai Shimen not only meets the district’s economic ambitions but also celebrates its natural heritage. Overcoming challenges of space and function, the design maximizes outdoor areas as extensions of accountable floor space, enriching the civic experience.
Recognized with the prestigious Golden A’ Design Award in 2025, Yunhai Shimen exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can advance art, science, and technology. The project sets a new benchmark for mixed-use developments, demonstrating how urban industry parks can become engines of growth, innovation, and community in rapidly evolving cities.
