Inspired by the poetic Chinese saying "joy, anger, sadness, happiness" and the iconic four-faced Buddha statues, Emotion Protocol stands as a kinetic installation that bridges ancient philosophy and contemporary design. Zhenglong Yang’s work draws on the tension between the richness of individual emotion and the pressures within East Asian cultures to suppress subjective feelings, reflecting a broader global conversation about emotional authenticity in a mechanized world.
The installation features multiple four-faced Buddha heads, each meticulously 3D-printed in resin and mounted on CNC-milled acrylic pedestals. These heads rotate in pre-programmed patterns, powered by stepper motors controlled via a custom-designed printed circuit board. The synchronized movement of the heads creates a mesmerizing visual rhythm, symbolizing the shifting states of human emotion and the mechanical regularity imposed by societal norms.
Emotion Protocol’s unique strength lies in its juxtaposition of spiritual iconography with technological precision. The rotating Buddha faces serve as both a visual metaphor for emotional fluidity and a commentary on the mechanization of human behavior. The installation invites viewers to engage in passive reflection, observing the interplay between the organic and the engineered, and considering the implications of emotional suppression in modern life.
Technically, the project exemplifies innovation in both fabrication and programming. The use of 3D-printed resin, CNC-milled acrylic, and custom electronics demonstrates a seamless integration of art and engineering. The algorithmic control of the motors ensures that each Buddha head moves in harmony, embodying the emotional narratives that inspired the work. This meticulous attention to detail highlights the designer’s commitment to both conceptual depth and technical excellence.
Emotion Protocol was realized in New York between September and December 2024 and exhibited at RacketNYC. The installation has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award for its practical innovation and ability to provoke meaningful reflection. By blending tradition with modernity, Zhenglong Yang’s work encourages audiences to reconsider the role of emotion in a world increasingly defined by rules and routines.
Emotion Protocol stands as a testament to the power of kinetic art to spark dialogue about the human condition, inviting viewers to contemplate their own emotional landscapes amid the pressures of contemporary society.
