The Kromme Table stands as a testament to the harmony between nature and design. Conceived by Robert Wakeland, this coffee table draws direct inspiration from the continuous motion of the sea, translating it into a single, flowing strip of solid walnut veneer. The result is a piece that is both bold and understated, making a statement in any contemporary living space.
What distinguishes the Kromme Table is its innovative construction method. Crafted entirely from 1/16” walnut veneer sections, the table employs bent lamination—a technique that involves molding thin layers together to achieve a sculptural curve. This approach not only ensures structural integrity but also minimizes waste, as the veneers are sliced with a knife rather than a saw, significantly reducing sawdust. The interior layers utilize less desirable sections such as sap wood, further enhancing sustainability.
The design’s minimalist supports, made from aluminum, provide essential strength without detracting from the table’s visual lightness. A clear glass top completes the piece, offering an unobstructed view of the intricate wood grain and the elegant curvature beneath. This thoughtful combination of materials and techniques results in a table that is as functional as it is visually captivating.
Attention to detail was paramount throughout the production process. The mold used for shaping the veneer was anchored with dovetail sliding joinery, ensuring precision and stability during lamination. This meticulous approach enabled the realization of the table’s complex curves, which would have been difficult to achieve with traditional joinery or steam bending methods. The decision to use bent lamination over other techniques was driven by a desire to maintain the uninterrupted, wave-like grain that defines the Kromme’s aesthetic.
The Kromme Table’s dimensions—444.5 mm wide, 1333.5 mm deep, and 355.6 mm high—make it a versatile addition to modern interiors. Its sculptural presence invites conversation, while its practical design ensures everyday usability. The table’s success has been recognized with a Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2025, celebrating its technical excellence and artistic innovation.
Robert Wakeland’s Kromme Table exemplifies how thoughtful design and sustainable practices can yield furniture that is both beautiful and responsible. As a piece that bridges art and function, it encourages a deeper appreciation for craftsmanship and the natural world.
