Packaging Bejeweled: Transforming Everyday Waste into Statement Jewelry

Nanxi Yang redefines sustainable luxury with innovative jewelry design

Packaging Bejeweled by Nanxi Yang challenges conventional jewelry by integrating recycled packaging materials, merging sustainability with contemporary aesthetics to provoke thought on value and beauty.

Inspired by the humble plastic egg carton, Nanxi Yang’s Packaging Bejeweled collection explores the intersection of protection, value, and sustainability. Drawing parallels between eggs and jewelry—both precious and in need of safeguarding—Yang reimagines disposable packaging as a vessel for treasured adornments. This approach not only elevates overlooked materials but also addresses the pressing issue of excessive packaging waste in modern society. The collection encourages a shift in perspective, suggesting that packaging can serve a lasting role beyond its initial function.

Packaging Bejeweled stands out for its inventive use of everyday materials, transforming affordable packaging into integral components of statement jewelry. Each piece, from necklaces to rings, features transparent resin shells that encase pearls, diamonds, or personal heirlooms. This design choice allows wearers to both protect and display their cherished items, turning the act of wearing jewelry into a personal and visual narrative. The collection’s versatility is further highlighted by pieces like the brooch necklace, which can be worn in multiple ways, and asymmetrical earrings that play with form and function.

The realization of Packaging Bejeweled relies on advanced technologies and sustainable practices. Utilizing recyclable materials such as resin, pearls, silver, and gold, each component is first modeled by hand and then produced using 3D printing. This process enhances material efficiency and minimizes waste, aligning with contemporary values of environmental responsibility. After printing, parts are polished and electroplated before being assembled, with each pearl or diamond carefully placed within its transparent shell, breaking away from traditional stringing or setting techniques.

Research for the collection focused on the potential of sustainable materials, particularly those found in London’s supermarket packaging. Yang identified local manufacturers specializing in recycled plastics like HDPE, PVC, and PET, with resin chosen for its clarity and adaptability. The designer also examined the role of luxury packaging in consumer experience, drawing inspiration from both historical and modern sources to create visually striking, velvet-lined cases in royal blue and red. These choices enhance the emotional and aesthetic value of the jewelry, making each piece a meaningful keepsake.

Packaging Bejeweled addresses both creative and technical challenges, from material selection to the ergonomic integration of packaging with traditional jewelry forms. The collection’s success lies in its ability to provoke reflection on sustainability, value, and beauty, while offering customizable options for a discerning clientele. The project’s innovative approach and execution earned it the Bronze A' Jewelry Design Award in 2025, recognizing its contribution to art, design, and quality of life.

By transforming discarded packaging into wearable art, Nanxi Yang’s Packaging Bejeweled invites audiences to reconsider the boundaries of luxury and sustainability, making a compelling case for the creative reuse of everyday materials in contemporary design.
