Located within the expansive "Uogu slenis" development in Vilnius, Lithuania, the Kindergarten in Vilnius stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of architecture and environment. NG Architects drew inspiration from the surrounding birch and pine forests, shaping the building’s form and atmosphere to echo the natural beauty of the Baltic landscape. This approach not only enriches the visual identity of the kindergarten but also creates a nurturing setting that supports early childhood development.
The design prioritizes child-centered learning, with a strong emphasis on sensory engagement and interaction with the outdoors. A striking feature is the hexagonal inner courtyard, symbolizing a "world of wonder" from a child’s perspective. This courtyard, lined with locally sourced wood, serves as a safe and playful space where children can explore, play, and learn in close proximity to nature. Large, vertical panoramic windows frame immersive views of the forest, allowing natural light to flood the classrooms while maintaining a sense of security and comfort.
Material selection and construction techniques further reinforce the project’s commitment to sustainability and child safety. The facade is clad in weather-resistant, dark panels that visually blend with the forest shadows, while the courtyard floors utilize tactile, local wood for comfort during play. The use of large, shatterproof glass panels ensures panoramic views without compromising safety, and thoughtful sun-shading elements prevent overheating, creating a comfortable indoor climate year-round.
Spanning 557 square meters, the kindergarten accommodates seven classrooms, including two specialized spaces for infants, and features a dual-entrance system for flexible space division. The building’s layout and material palette reflect a deep understanding of both educational needs and environmental context, setting a new standard for child-centric, sustainable architecture in educational facilities.
The Kindergarten in Vilnius has garnered international recognition, receiving the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building, and Structure Design in 2025. This accolade highlights the project’s outstanding expertise, technical excellence, and innovative approach to creating environments that inspire wonder and foster a lifelong love of learning and nature among children.
NG Architects’ work in Vilnius exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform educational spaces, offering a blueprint for future projects that seek to nurture both the mind and the environment.
