Focus: A Modular Revolution in Personal Care

Innovative shower brush adapts to every bathing need

Focus, designed by Xiaoqin Pan and Antong Xu, reimagines the traditional shower brush with a modular, user-centric approach, addressing diverse personal care needs and seasonal skin changes.

Bathing rituals often require a variety of tools to effectively clean different body parts, but traditional brushes fall short in offering true versatility. Focus, a modular shower brush, introduces a flexible solution by allowing users to quickly swap components and handles, ensuring optimal comfort and cleanliness for every area of the body. This design responds directly to the challenges of reaching awkward spots and adapting to changing skin conditions throughout the year.

The core innovation of Focus lies in its interchangeable system. Users can select from four different functional components, each tailored for specific cleaning needs, and assemble them into either a long-handled brush for hard-to-reach areas or a compact form for targeted use. The handle itself doubles as a container for body wash or shampoo, enabling quick changes in fragrance or formula according to personal preference or seasonal requirements. This adaptability is particularly appreciated by those who enjoy experimenting with new scents or require specialized care for sensitive skin.

Constructed from recycled plastic, Focus demonstrates a commitment to sustainability, while its bristles—crafted from silicone and sponge—offer gentle yet effective cleansing. The design’s technical specifications (90mm width, 70mm depth, 300mm height) ensure ergonomic handling and ease of use. The modular components are magnetized for convenient storage, making the product both practical and aesthetically pleasing in any bathroom setting.

Extensive research underpins the development of Focus. The design team analyzed user habits and preferences, discovering a strong desire for customizable bathing experiences, especially among women who favor a variety of body wash scents. By studying and adapting the mechanics of vacuum dispensing bottles, the designers engineered a detachable, refillable handle that seamlessly integrates with the brush system. This research-driven approach ensures that Focus not only meets but anticipates the evolving needs of modern consumers.

The project, completed in Beijing between April and June 2024, overcame significant challenges in modular engineering and aesthetic integration. The result is a product that balances technical innovation with visual harmony, earning Focus the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2025 for beauty, personal care, and cosmetic products. This recognition highlights the design’s exceptional creativity, technical excellence, and positive impact on daily routines.

Focus stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in enhancing everyday life, offering a customizable, sustainable, and elegant solution for personal care enthusiasts worldwide.
