The Six Senses billiards table, designed by Mingzhi Cai and Fengshi Li, stands as a testament to the power of cultural storytelling in contemporary design. Drawing inspiration from the classic Chinese mythological tale, Journey to the West, this table features six distinct display panels, each narrating a legendary scene—from the formidable Bull Demon King to the ethereal Little Western Heaven. The table’s six legs, shaped as the Sea God Needle, and the column head reliefs representing the six senses of Buddhism, infuse the piece with symbolic depth, elevating it far beyond a mere gaming surface.
What distinguishes Six Senses is its seamless integration of traditional Chinese artistic techniques with cutting-edge production methods. The table’s surface is crafted from walnut wood, polished over ten times to achieve a flawless finish, while the solid wood frame is inlaid with mother of pearl abalone shells—a nod to Southeast Asian royal furniture. Two striking color schemes are available: a regal dark green and gold, and a blue antique bronze, each echoing the grandeur of ancient courts.
The realization of this design involved a harmonious blend of hand-carved reliefs, CNC-machined legs, and intricate inlay work. Hundreds of artists contributed to the selection of story paintings, which were then digitized and embedded into the table using high-definition scanning and inkjet printing. The meticulous process, overseen by art director Fengshi Li, spanned six months of refinements to ensure every detail met the highest artistic standards.
Research played a pivotal role in the creation of Six Senses. Over 700 days, the design team delved into cultural narratives and technical innovations, experimenting with hundreds of sculpture models and gathering feedback from twenty professionals across disciplines. This commitment to cultural aesthetics, rather than purely commercial considerations, sets the project apart in the world of luxury sports equipment.
The challenges faced during development were significant, particularly in translating mythological stories into tangible art forms and adapting manual techniques for scalable production. The result, however, is a product that delivers both visual splendor and superior playability, with a crisp ball sound and smooth movement that satisfy even the most discerning players.
Now exhibited in Beijing and protected by a Chinese patent, Six Senses has garnered international acclaim, including the Iron A' Design Award in 2025. This billiards table not only celebrates the enduring allure of Journey to the West but also exemplifies how cultural heritage and modern technology can unite to create objects of lasting beauty and function.
