Timber and Table stands as a testament to the power of adaptive reuse in contemporary hospitality design. By preserving original features such as exposed timber beams, tiled roofs, and courtyards, the project creates a unique environment where guests can experience both the warmth of tradition and the comforts of modern dining. Handcrafted decor and local materials further reinforce the connection to place, while landscaped outdoor spaces and cozy interiors foster a welcoming, community-oriented atmosphere.
The realization of Timber and Table involved a meticulous process of restoration and enhancement. Existing timber structures and brick walls were retained and repaired using a “repair as found” approach, allowing imperfections to narrate the building’s history. Traditional craftsmanship techniques were employed alongside discreet structural reinforcements and modern systems, achieving a delicate balance between heritage preservation and contemporary utility. This careful integration ensures the restaurant meets today’s functional and safety standards without sacrificing its historic soul.
One of the project’s defining features is its spatial coherence. The design connects two previously separate building volumes through a transitional space and staircase, improving circulation and guest experience. At the heart of the restaurant, the traditional siheyuan courtyard has been preserved and transformed into a reflecting pool, complete with koi fish. This sensory pause point invites diners to linger and engage, embodying the concept of “four water return to the hall” and offering a moment of reflection amid the dining experience.
Timber and Table’s design is grounded in extensive research on vernacular courtyard architecture and traditional construction techniques. Field investigations of the existing building informed decisions on preservation and reinterpretation, while contemporary hospitality needs guided the integration of service zones and kitchen operations. The result is a harmonious blend of old and new, where spatial values and user expectations are seamlessly aligned.
Overcoming the challenge of preserving aging materials while ensuring structural safety, the design team employed selective reinforcement and advanced assessments to maintain the building’s authentic textures and atmosphere. This approach, combined with the use of natural materials and strategic lighting, creates an environment that supports both communal gatherings and intimate dining experiences.
Recognized with the Iron A’ Design Award in 2025, Timber and Table exemplifies how thoughtful design can celebrate cultural heritage, foster community, and set new standards for sustainable hospitality environments.
