Cosmic Creek stands as a testament to the evolving relationship between nature and urban development. Inspired by Chengdu’s deep-rooted cultural connection to water, the project seeks to dissolve boundaries between city life and the natural world. By integrating research on topography, ecological systems, and human behavior, the design aims to foster a sustainable environment where daily activities naturally intertwine with green spaces. This approach not only reimagines commercial architecture but also enhances the quality of urban living for the community.
Spanning an impressive 100,000 square meters, Cosmic Creek distinguishes itself through its “L-shaped” water system, which carves out terraced zones for play, relaxation, and social gathering. The central plaza, featuring cascading waterfalls and a striking geometric ring structure, serves as a vibrant focal point, offering panoramic city views and dynamic public engagement. The innovative “Ginkgo Leaf Units” provide shade, irrigation, and lighting, seamlessly blending modern design with oriental aesthetics. These features collectively redefine how urban spaces can harmonize sustainability, commerce, and natural beauty.
The realization of Cosmic Creek relies on advanced digital construction technologies, ensuring precision across varied elevations and complex forms. Prefabrication and customization were essential, particularly for the unique Ginkgo Leaf Units, which were fabricated from steel using digitally controlled methods. The close collaboration between architectural and landscape teams enabled the integration of thematic elements, such as tree planters and waterfalls, directly into the site’s geometry, resulting in immersive green spaces that invite exploration and interaction.
Technical specifications highlight the project’s ambitious scale and attention to detail. The central ring-shaped structure, often referred to as the “UFO,” measures 106 meters in diameter and rises 17 meters above ground, providing a 360-degree perspective of the city. The terraced water system, with elevations ranging from one to six meters, is interconnected by gentle ramps, ensuring accessibility and an engaging pedestrian journey. The Ginkgo Leaf Units, varying from 11 to 15 meters in height, incorporate independent systems for irrigation, planting, and lighting, reinforcing the project’s commitment to ecological integration.
Cosmic Creek’s design process was shaped by extensive research into the interplay of water, nature, and architecture, with a focus on enhancing social interaction and sustainability. The team overcame significant challenges, particularly in managing the site’s topographical diversity. Innovative gradient ramps and multi-level pathways replaced traditional layouts, ensuring smooth circulation and functional connectivity. The ongoing refinement of the design, scheduled for completion in 2026/2027, underscores a commitment to transforming urban space through harmonious integration of nature and community.
Recognized with the prestigious Platinum A’ Design Award in 2025, Cosmic Creek exemplifies world-class innovation in architecture. By advancing the boundaries of art, science, and design, the project not only elevates the urban landscape of Chengdu but also sets a benchmark for future developments seeking to unite sustainability, community, and aesthetic excellence.
