Set amidst the picturesque scenery of Lotus Island in Suzhou, the Youhe Community stands as a beacon of rural revitalization and hospitality design. Drawing inspiration from the island’s serene lakes and lush greenery, the project embraces the collective ethos of rural cooperatives, fostering a sense of shared purpose and sustainable growth. This unique blend of natural beauty and community engagement transforms the space into a vibrant destination for both locals and visitors seeking an immersive agro-tourism experience.
Zhifeng Zhao’s design approach distinguishes itself through the creative use of hand-drawn illustrations, simple lines, and a striking palette of orange and white. The architecture harmoniously integrates repurposed materials with the surrounding landscape, while interiors crafted from wood and rattan evoke a sense of simplicity and closeness to nature. Visitors are welcomed into a thoughtfully arranged space featuring dining areas with panoramic views, cozy reading nooks, and versatile zones for gatherings and study, all designed to encourage relaxation and social interaction.
Sustainability lies at the heart of the Youhe Community. The project’s realization prioritized cost-effective solutions, with a focus on reusing old wood and integrating construction with design. This approach not only minimized environmental impact but also added distinctive character to the space. The single-floor layout is organized around a central bar counter, with adjacent exhibition areas, terraces, and tiered seating, offering flexibility for events and community activities.
Collaboration played a pivotal role throughout the project’s development. Early-stage research involved extensive dialogue with stakeholders, including the local government, property owners, and university students. This multi-layered engagement ensured that the design reflected both practical needs and innovative perspectives, resulting in a space that resonates with diverse audiences. The project’s success is further underscored by its popularity during peak seasons, such as the annual crab harvest, when it becomes a bustling hub for leisure and commerce.
Despite budgetary constraints, the design team overcame creative and technical challenges through strategic material selection and close cooperation with construction partners. This careful balance between vision and practicality enabled the realization of a high-quality, sustainable environment without compromising on craftsmanship or aesthetic appeal.
Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, the Youhe Community exemplifies excellence in hospitality, recreation, and tourism design. By merging pastoral charm with innovative functionality, the project offers a model for rural redevelopment that celebrates both heritage and forward-thinking design.
