Color Rhythms: A Fusion of Music and Heritage

Maragheh’s Festival Identity Blends Architecture, Art, and Sound

The Abd al-Qadir Maraghi National Music Festival’s visual identity, designed by Naser Nasiri, masterfully intertwines Maragheh’s architectural legacy with contemporary design, celebrating both tradition and innovation.

The design for the festival draws inspiration from the historic city of Maragheh, particularly the iconic Sorkh Dome and its Kufic inscriptions. Naser Nasiri’s approach integrates geometric patterns and turquoise tiles, echoing the city’s rich cultural tapestry. The visual identity features hand-drawn illustrations of traditional Iranian instruments, seamlessly merging the festival’s musical essence with the architectural motifs that define Maragheh’s skyline. The color palette—lapis blue, gold, and turquoise—reflects the hues found in Iranian miniatures and the city’s storied past.

Distinctive for its focus on illustration and typography, the design stands apart through its dynamic composition inspired by Maragheh’s brickwork patterns. The rhythmic arrangement of visual elements creates a sense of movement, while hand-drawn depictions of musicians’ hands emphasize the deep-rooted connection between the city’s history and its musical traditions. This fusion of Eastern aesthetics and modern minimalism results in a visual language that is both regionally authentic and globally resonant.

Technically, the festival’s identity leverages advanced typography, drawing from ancient Kufic Maqeli calligraphy. The logo cleverly combines the number two—signifying the festival’s second edition—with an illustration of a hand playing the daf, a traditional percussion instrument. The design extends across multiple formats, including posters, banners, billboards, tote bags, and a comprehensive 300-page book, ensuring a cohesive visual experience throughout the event’s various touchpoints.

Extensive research underpins the project, encompassing library studies, field exploration of Maragheh’s architecture, and interviews with experts in music and cultural heritage. This rigorous process enabled the creation of a visual identity that authentically reflects Maragheh’s legacy while communicating the festival’s contemporary spirit. Overcoming challenges such as limited access to historical references and balancing traditional motifs with modern production techniques, the design demonstrates both creative ingenuity and technical prowess.

The festival’s visual identity not only honors Abdulqadir Maraghi’s contributions to music but also serves as a bridge between past and present. By harmonizing historical references with innovative design, Naser Nasiri’s work invites audiences to experience the enduring rhythm of Maragheh’s culture in a modern context.

Celebrated with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, Color Rhythms exemplifies how thoughtful design can preserve cultural heritage while inspiring new artistic expressions. The festival’s identity stands as a testament to the power of visual storytelling in connecting communities through art, architecture, and music.
