Dunhuang Lute: Bridging Heritage and Modern Play

Xinming Liu’s collectible toys make ancient mural art accessible to youth

Xinming Liu’s Dunhuang Lute project reinterprets the iconic pipa from Dunhuang murals, blending centuries-old Chinese artistry with contemporary toy design to educate and inspire a new generation.

The Dunhuang Lute project stands at the intersection of cultural storytelling and trendy toys, offering a fresh approach to preserving and sharing Chinese heritage. Drawing inspiration from the vivid murals of Dunhuang, Xinming Liu has crafted a series of collectible toys and illustrated books that capture the essence of historical periods from the Northern Dynasties to the Song-Yuan era. Each character’s attire and makeup are meticulously based on mural imagery, translated into modern illustration styles that resonate with today’s youth.

What sets Dunhuang Lute apart is its commitment to authenticity and educational value. The character designs avoid fleeting toy trends, instead focusing on the unique facial features and costumes of ancient sculptures. This careful attention to detail provides a tangible link to the past, making the project a valuable tool for learning about Chinese history and culture. The modular toy figures invite hands-on interaction, while the accompanying illustrated book offers rich narratives and historical context, deepening the user’s engagement with the art and its origins.

Technological innovation played a crucial role in the realization of this project. Xinming Liu utilized ZBrush for digital modeling, followed by 3D printing to refine the figures, and KeyShot for high-quality rendering. The toys are available in two sizes—15cm and 30cm—making them suitable for both play and display. This blend of digital craftsmanship and physical production exemplifies how traditional art can be revitalized through modern technology.

Research into Dunhuang’s pipa culture revealed over 689 mural depictions of the instrument, each reflecting shifts in musical style and cultural expression across dynasties. By analyzing these historical sources, the project not only preserves the visual language of the murals but also narrates the evolution of the pipa, from the robust plucking of the Tang dynasty to the emotive finger techniques of later periods. This depth of research ensures that each toy and illustration is rooted in genuine cultural significance.

The transition from two-dimensional mural art to three-dimensional toys presented significant design challenges. Xinming Liu overcame these by repeatedly adjusting models for accuracy and visual appeal, balancing educational intent with engaging aesthetics. Technical hurdles, such as optimizing models for animation and color, were addressed through innovative solutions, resulting in a product that is both visually striking and functionally robust.

Recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, Dunhuang Lute exemplifies how art, design, and technology can converge to create meaningful, interactive experiences. By transforming ancient mural art into collectible toys and illustrated stories, the project fosters a deeper appreciation of Chinese cultural heritage among younger audiences, ensuring its relevance for generations to come.

Xinming Liu’s Dunhuang Lute project demonstrates the power of design to bridge history and modernity, inviting users to explore, assemble, and learn from the rich legacy of Dunhuang’s art in a format that is both accessible and captivating.
