Essence of Space: Modular Living in Urban Taipei

Studio One redefines residential interiors with flexible modular design.

Essence of Space, designed by Studio One, addresses the challenges of urban residential interiors by embracing a modular approach. Each area within the 58-square-meter apartment is conceptualized as an independent cube, allowing the layout to adapt seamlessly to changing needs. This flexibility is achieved through the use of sliding and folding doors, enabling residents to shift between open communal zones and private, isolated spaces as required.

The design’s core principle revolves around maximizing both light and functionality within a limited footprint. With only one side of the apartment receiving natural light, Studio One implemented an open floor plan to allow daylight to penetrate as deeply as possible. Double-glazed windows and walls provide essential sound and heat insulation, creating a calm retreat from Taipei’s bustling urban environment while maintaining a bright, airy atmosphere.

Structural considerations were paramount in the project’s realization. Given the building’s age and location, Studio One conducted a thorough analysis of the bearing wall and beam system. Partition walls were strategically designed to reinforce the existing structure, and built-in wooden cabinets and metal racks were anchored to load-bearing elements, ensuring both safety and durability. This approach not only enhances the apartment’s resilience—especially important in earthquake-prone Taiwan—but also supports the minimalist aesthetic.

Functionality and adaptability define the user experience. The apartment’s zones—including living, dining, kitchen, study/guest room, master bedroom, and bathroom—can be merged into a single open space or separated for privacy. Adjustable window walls and shades further refine the balance between light, privacy, and environmental control. Studio One’s research into material selection and spatial relationships ensures that the interior remains tranquil and versatile despite its urban context.

Essence of Space has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award, highlighting its practical innovation and integration of industry best practices. By prioritizing flexibility, structural integrity, and thoughtful material choices, Studio One demonstrates how even the most compact urban residences can offer a sense of spaciousness and possibility.
