Sliding: A Remote Control Redefining Accessibility

Innovative air conditioner remote empowers the blind with tactile and voice features.

Sliding by Zhejiang Zhongguang Electrical Co., Ltd. introduces a groundbreaking approach to air conditioning control, designed specifically for the blind, blending tactile feedback, voice assistance, and sustainable technology.

Traditional air conditioning remote controls often overlook the needs of visually impaired users, creating barriers to comfort and independence. Sliding addresses this gap with a thoughtful design that places accessibility at its core. The device features a braille display, allowing blind users to easily read temperature settings and operational modes. This tactile interface is complemented by a voice system, which audibly announces selections and changes, ensuring clarity and confidence during use.

Sliding’s user interface is engineered for intuitive operation. A sliding button enables rapid temperature adjustments, while an arrow-shaped button provides precise control. Mode and airflow settings are integrated into a large, easily distinguishable button, further enhanced by voice feedback for seamless navigation. The inclusion of a dedicated voice control button allows users to command the air conditioner directly, reducing reliance on physical buttons and enhancing accessibility.

Sustainability is another hallmark of Sliding’s design. The remote control incorporates a magnetic charging panel, eliminating the need for disposable batteries. This not only simplifies charging for blind users—who can easily align the device with the magnetic dock—but also contributes to environmental conservation by reducing electronic waste.

The development of Sliding was informed by extensive research into existing products for the blind and conventional remote controls. Findings revealed significant usability challenges for visually impaired individuals, particularly in accessing and interpreting information. Sliding’s design team, including Yuhui Xu, Jinghong Zhang, Menglin Xie, Yuxin He, Haiping Hou, and Xiaojun Yuan, responded by prioritizing tactile clarity, intuitive button placement, and long battery life to address these challenges.

Measuring 130mm by 35mm by 10mm, Sliding is compact yet packed with features that set a new standard in accessible product design. Its innovative approach has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Products for 2025, highlighting its technical excellence and positive impact on daily living for the blind.

Sliding exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge gaps in accessibility, offering visually impaired users greater autonomy and comfort in their environments. As the demand for inclusive technology grows, such innovations pave the way for a more equitable and user-friendly future.
