Amytis Cup: A Porcelain Ode to Ancient Gardens

Inspired by Babylon’s Hanging Gardens, Amytis redefines tactile elegance in drinkware.

Drawing on the legend of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Zeynep Zumre and Mesut Zumre’s Amytis cup transforms a historic love story into a modern, sensory experience, blending artistry, innovation, and function.

The Amytis cup stands as a testament to the enduring influence of ancient narratives in contemporary design. Inspired by the legendary gardens built by Nebuchadnezzar for Queen Amytis, the cup’s form mimics a cluster of grapes—symbolizing both abundance and longing. This visual and tactile reference invites users to experience the sensation of holding a grape cluster, merging history with daily ritual.

What distinguishes Amytis is its unique blend of storytelling and ergonomics. The cup’s design not only delights visually but also offers a comfortable grip, thanks to its carefully contoured surface. Crafted from Limoges porcelain, Amytis features a glossy finish that enhances both its aesthetic and practical qualities—easy to clean and suitable for hot or cold beverages. The accompanying serving plate completes the set, reinforcing the design’s commitment to elegance and utility.

Production of Amytis involves a meticulous process that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. The initial model is shaped and then rendered using a 3D printer, after which porcelain clay is poured into plaster molds. The piece undergoes two firings—first at 1050°C for biscuit firing, then at 1230°C for glazing—resulting in a durable, lustrous finish. This rigorous process ensures that each cup retains its distinctive form and tactile appeal.

Adaptability is a central feature of Amytis. While originally conceived as a coffee mug, its versatile design accommodates wine or small snacks, allowing users to redefine their experience with each use. This flexibility, paired with its ergonomic and aesthetic qualities, positions Amytis as a standout in contemporary tableware.

Amytis has garnered recognition for its innovation, earning the Iron A’ Design Award in 2025 for its excellence in bakeware, tableware, and drinkware. The award acknowledges designs that integrate industry best practices with creative vision, contributing to a more fulfilling lifestyle. Amytis not only pays homage to ancient artistry but also sets a new standard for modern functional design.

With its roots in historical inspiration and its eyes on contemporary living, Amytis by Zeynep Zumre and Mesut Zumre exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate everyday moments, turning the simple act of drinking into an evocative, sensory journey.
