Eric Wu’s Cobble: Mindfulness Meets Modern Audio Design

Interactive Bluetooth speaker blends play, peace, and technology

Cobble by Eric Wu reimagines the Bluetooth speaker as a tool for inadvertent mindfulness, drawing inspiration from the contemplative nature of the board game Go and offering users a unique, interactive audio experience.

In a world where mindfulness is often prescribed through apps and structured sessions, Eric Wu’s Cobble speaker introduces a refreshing alternative. Inspired by the meditative act of placing stones in the game of Go, Cobble encourages users to find calm through simple, tactile interaction. The speaker’s design challenges the conventional boundaries of audio devices, inviting users to engage with sound and presence in a playful, unforced manner.

At the heart of Cobble’s innovation lies its interactive grid interface. Users can arrange four magnetic pegs on the speaker’s surface, forming patterns that trigger preset sound profiles. This act of arranging pegs, reminiscent of Go’s thoughtful gameplay, offers moments of peace and focus. According to research cited by Wu, concentrating on a single action—even as simple as placing a peg—can foster a sense of respite, supporting the concept of “inadvertent mindfulness.”

The construction of Cobble reflects a commitment to both form and function. The prototype features a wooden casing with sand-blasted acrylic panels that diffuse the soft glow of LED lights, creating a visually soothing effect. Technically, the device employs magnetic sensing using Hall effect sensors, chosen for their reliability after extensive experimentation. The control panel, initially built with an Arduino Nano, is set to be upgraded for mass production, ensuring both efficiency and scalability.

User research played a pivotal role in shaping Cobble’s design. Collaborations with co-working spaces helped determine optimal peg size, grid layout, and overall footprint, balancing engagement with practicality. The final dimensions—7.5 inches wide, 7.3 inches deep, and 2 inches high—make Cobble an unobtrusive yet interactive addition to shelves and workspaces. The speaker functions as a standard Bluetooth device, while its unique interface allows users to activate and customize sound profiles, including nature and white noise loops, via a companion mobile app.

Cobble’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. The design was awarded Iron in the A' Digital and Electronic Device Design Award 2025, a recognition reserved for creations that blend practicality, innovation, and emotional resonance. By integrating mindful interaction into everyday technology, Cobble exemplifies how thoughtful design can enhance well-being and elevate daily routines.

As technology continues to shape lifestyles, Cobble stands as a testament to the power of subtle, intentional design. Its blend of interactive play, calming aesthetics, and audio functionality invites users to rediscover moments of tranquility—one peg at a time.
