Ripple of Knowledge, located in Taipei City, reimagines the school library as a dynamic hub for exploration and creativity. Drawing inspiration from the gentle movement of water, the design centers on the concept of ripples, using curved elements and flowing light to define zones and guide movement. Low-height cabinets serve multiple functions—acting as storage, seating, and subtle dividers—while maintaining openness and visual continuity throughout the space.
The library’s spatial arrangement is both functional and inviting. A centrally positioned curved counter allows the librarian to oversee the entire area, ensuring efficient management and flexibility. In one corner, long curved bookshelves and integrated audiovisual equipment create a stage area, making the library suitable for teaching, events, and performances. This adaptability reflects a broader trend in educational design, where libraries evolve from static repositories into vibrant centers for diverse learning experiences.
Technology is seamlessly woven into the environment. Tablets are available for students to access the library catalog and serve as supplementary teaching tools, supporting interactive and digital learning. The inclusion of these devices highlights the growing importance of integrating technology into educational spaces, preparing students for a rapidly changing world.
Distinctive design details further enhance the library’s identity. Two unique bookends—Ripple and Dragon Ball—embody the project’s themes. The Ripple bookend, crafted from translucent acrylic, features concentric engravings that, when paired, create a complete ripple effect, symbolizing the spread of knowledge. The Dragon Ball bookend references local culture and the school’s name, representing the uplifting power of reading and imagination.
The project’s realization involved a combination of prefabricated shelving and on-site carpentry, ensuring both precision and adaptability. The design team, including Jenny Yeh and Hao Sung, overcame challenges in creating a space that balances openness with defined zones, and fosters both quiet study and lively interaction. Their approach aligns with research on children’s cognitive development, recognizing that knowledge acquisition is a dynamic, ripple-like process that influences both individuals and their communities.
Ripple of Knowledge was honored with the Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025, recognizing its creative ingenuity and positive impact on quality of life. By blending art, science, and technology, the library stands as a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design in education.
This innovative library invites children to embark on journeys of discovery, setting ripples of inspiration in motion that extend far beyond its walls.
