Art and Numeracy Academy: Redefining Math Learning Spaces

Innovative design merges play, aesthetics, and numeracy in Taipei City.

Art and Numeracy Academy by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan transforms traditional math education through a thoughtfully designed environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and practical learning.

Located in Taipei City, the Art and Numeracy Academy stands as a pioneering example of how spatial design can elevate educational experiences. Conceived by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan, the project draws inspiration from geometric forms—squares, triangles, and circles—integrated with L-System-inspired tree branches. This approach results in fluid, curved spaces that are both visually striking and functionally inviting. The use of bright, elegant tones paired with warm, light wood textures creates a modern yet cozy atmosphere, fostering a sense of comfort and openness for young learners.

The Academy’s mission, “Unlocking Key Learning Through Play,” is evident in every aspect of its design. By continuing the legacy of the Numeracy Lab, the space makes mathematics practical, accessible, and enjoyable. The curriculum focuses on foundational and cross-disciplinary STEAM courses, nurturing not only numerical reasoning but also creative aesthetics and emotional resilience in children. This holistic approach ensures that students are equipped with the skills necessary for both academic and personal growth.

Construction of the Academy combines on-site carpentry with prefabricated furniture, resulting in a seamless blend of custom craftsmanship and efficient production. Spanning approximately 200 square meters, the interior utilizes environmentally friendly materials, including green building components and sound-absorbing wood wool panels. Advanced digital equipment further enhances the learning environment, while child-friendly features such as appropriately sized sinks and restrooms promote independence among younger students.

A standout feature is the multifunctional area beneath a large, sculptural tree, designed as a hub for reading, discussions, and collaborative activities. This space encourages interaction between children and adults, reinforcing the Academy’s commitment to community and shared learning. A prominent display window allows teachers and students to exhibit mathematical projects, showcasing innovative outcomes and fostering a culture of creativity and achievement throughout the year.

The design process, which began in October 2023 and concluded in March 2024, involved a dedicated team including Jenny Yeh and Hao Sung. Overcoming the challenge of balancing aesthetics with functionality, the Academy has emerged as a model for educational spaces that inspire confidence and joy in mathematics. The project’s excellence has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, highlighting its contribution to quality of life and educational innovation.

Art and Numeracy Academy exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform the perception of mathematics, making it an engaging, accessible, and empowering subject for the next generation.
