Inspired by the De Stijl movement’s use of primary colors and geometric abstraction, Color Roller explores the interplay of red, yellow, and blue through transparent acrylic panels. By layering these panels, the furniture set creates a spectrum of colors that shift depending on light and perspective. This approach not only pays homage to early 20th-century art but also introduces a fresh, interactive element to contemporary interiors.
The set comprises three distinct pieces: a hexagonal chair, a rectangular table, and a triangular floor lamp. Each component is constructed from intersecting acrylic panels, allowing users to roll, flip, and rearrange the pieces. This flexibility enables personal expression and customization, making every arrangement unique to the user’s taste and spatial needs.
Technically, the furniture is realized through colored acrylic thermoforming and adhesive bonding, ensuring both visual lightness and structural integrity. Extensive research and prototyping informed the final design, with various materials and thicknesses tested to balance strength and elegance. The result is a collection that maintains its minimalist aesthetic while supporting practical use, particularly in the load-bearing hexagonal chair.
Color Roller’s interactive nature encourages users to engage with their environment. Rolling and repositioning the pieces alters the color combinations and spatial experience, fostering a creative atmosphere. This dynamic approach to furniture design reflects a broader trend in lifestyle innovation, where adaptability and personalization are highly valued.
Chuheng He’s project, completed in Shanghai between March and October 2024, stands out for its inventive use of materials, geometric clarity, and transformative impact on interior spaces. The recognition from the A' Design Award underscores its significance as a trendsetting creation that advances both art and technology in furniture design.
Color Roller exemplifies how thoughtful design can merge artistic inspiration with functional innovation, inviting users to become co-creators in shaping their living environments.
