Panlong Tiandi Mtpt, designed by Minghong Ou, stands as a testament to the evolving relationship between architecture and the natural world. Located in Shanghai’s historic Panlong Ancient Town, this retail space draws inspiration from the textures and sounds of outdoor environments—forests, streams, ponds, and mountain huts—seamlessly integrating these elements to create a unique, sensory-rich shopping experience. The design’s core theme, “Touching Nature,” is evident throughout, as the boundaries between interior and exterior dissolve, inviting the flexible beauty of nature to flow freely within the space.
One of the most distinctive features of Panlong Tiandi Mtpt is its morning glory-shaped sound installation. This innovative element collects and projects natural sounds—such as water, birds, and wind—enveloping visitors in a mysterious world of sound and light. The installation not only enhances the ambiance but also fosters a deeper connection between people and their environment, offering an unprecedented way to interact with nature inside a retail setting.
The material palette further reinforces the natural atmosphere. Raw wood and micro-cement dominate the interiors, while expansive floor-to-ceiling windows frame the surrounding water town scenery. This architectural approach ensures that natural light and outdoor vistas become integral to the shopping experience, blurring the line between man-made and organic. The technical challenge of suspending 20mm-thick wooden planks above the display area was ingeniously solved by using an internal aluminum alloy frame clad in wood veneer, ensuring both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
Research into consumer behavior and spatial psychology informed the design process, with techniques such as dialogue, tropes, and defamiliarization used to evoke memories of nature in a novel context. Abstract representations of streams, ponds, and forests of light encourage visitors to engage with the space on a sensory and emotional level, transforming routine shopping into a journey of discovery.
This project, completed between June and November 2024, exemplifies how retail environments can be reimagined to enhance well-being and foster a sense of symbiosis with nature. The design’s success was recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life improvements.
Panlong Tiandi Mtpt demonstrates that retail spaces can transcend commercial function, becoming immersive environments that nurture the human connection to nature while showcasing innovative design and technical mastery.
