Located in Miaoli County, often called the “Mountain City,” this award-winning interior design project reimagines the relationship between built space and the surrounding landscape. The design extends flowing, three-dimensional lines throughout the 100-square-meter residence, guiding the eye from within the home to the sweeping mountain views outside. This visual connection is achieved through the use of continuous lines and layered depths, echoing the undulating forms of mountains and rivers.
The interior palette is rooted in earth tones, with walls finished in artistic paint that reflects the fertile soil beneath the mountains. Natural light enhances these hues, creating an ambiance that is both rugged and timeless. The design’s core is a three-tiered ceiling, which cleverly conceals technical elements such as air purification systems, ERV, and air conditioning, maximizing the living area’s clear height while maintaining a seamless aesthetic.
Functionality is a key aspect of the project. The elongated layout is divided into independent yet fluid zones, including a dust area, a living room oriented toward the mountains, an island and dining space for casual meals, and a dedicated kitchen. This thoughtful arrangement allows each area to operate autonomously while maintaining a sense of unity and flow throughout the public spaces.
Sustainability and wellness are central to the design philosophy. The project adheres to the WELL Building Standard®, incorporating advanced air and water purification systems, EU Ecolabel-certified tiles, natural stucco wall paint, and FSC-certified low-formaldehyde cabinetry. These interventions ensure a healthy indoor environment, reduce chemical contaminants, and promote sustainable living practices.
“Layers of Mountains” has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design for 2025. This accolade highlights the project’s creative ingenuity, technical excellence, and contribution to enhancing quality of life through the integration of art, science, and technology.
By framing public spaces with structural beams and integrating a central axis of light and air, Yi-Lun Hsu’s design not only celebrates Miaoli’s natural beauty but also sets a benchmark for sustainable, wellness-focused interiors that foster a deep connection between people and their environment.
