In Korean culture, chapssaltteok, a glutinous rice cake, is often given as a good-luck token, symbolizing the hope of "sticking" to one’s goals or desired university. Pass Train, designed by Jiwon Jung, reinterprets this tradition through a contemporary lens, using the imagery and structure of a train to represent the journey toward success. This innovative packaging concept elevates a simple gift into a meaningful narrative, making the act of giving both memorable and motivational.
The Pass Train collection features several distinct packages, each representing a stage of progress. The Signature Locomotive Package, with its elevated chimney, embodies momentum and forward movement. The Passenger Train and Cube Packages extend the journey, offering single-serving convenience and reinforcing the theme of perseverance. The Terminal Package, rendered in bold black, marks the achievement of the final goal, while the Two-Story Signature Package provides a premium gifting experience, completing the story arc.
Sustainability is a core element of Pass Train’s design. Eco-friendly paper materials and double-layered reinforced paperboard ensure both durability and environmental responsibility. The use of precise die-cut techniques shapes the locomotive chimney, while offset printing with matte and gloss finishes highlights the vibrant color variations. These technical choices not only enhance visual appeal but also reinforce the product’s identity and purpose.
Research for Pass Train involved analyzing market trends in success-wishing gifts and exploring the emotional resonance of chapssaltteok in Korean culture. Surveys with students and gift buyers informed the interactive and symbolic aspects of the packaging, ensuring that each element—from the Pass Train Ticket to the Terminal Package—contributes to an immersive unboxing experience. This approach bridges tradition and innovation, offering a unique way to express encouragement and support.
One of the main challenges faced during development was integrating the symbolic meaning of chapssaltteok with the structural complexity of a train, while maintaining functionality and cost-effectiveness. Multiple prototypes were created to perfect the elevated chimney and overall stability. The final design stands out for its ability to blend cultural significance, storytelling, and technical ingenuity, earning it the Iron A' Packaging Design Award in 2025.
Pass Train exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform everyday rituals into powerful experiences. By merging tradition with modern aesthetics and sustainable practices, this packaging not only delivers a gift but also a message of perseverance and hope for the future.
