Immersive Evolution and Ocean Halls at Naturkundemuseum Stuttgart

Dynamic exhibition design redefines science engagement and museum experience

Naturkundemuseum Stuttgart’s reimagined exhibition halls, designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates, set a new benchmark in museum design by transforming historic courtyards into vibrant spaces that celebrate evolution and biodiversity through immersive scenography and interactive learning.

Ralph Appelbaum Associates has revitalized the Naturkundemuseum Stuttgart by reopening its two central exhibition halls, each dedicated to the themes of evolution and biodiversity. The design leverages the castle’s former courtyards, transforming them into day-lit environments that embrace natural light, filtered and colored to create a dynamic atmosphere. The Ocean Hall captivates with a dramatic cutaway model of a sei whale, while the Evolution Hall features an imposing African elephant bull alongside a European forest elephant, both serving as focal points for their respective spaces.

The exhibition’s uniqueness lies in its thematic islands and immersive environments. In the Evolution Hall, six islands radiate around a central multimedia table, allowing visitors to explore evolutionary concepts through spectacular specimens, interactive graphics, and hands-on displays. The Ocean Hall, bathed in shifting blue light, guides visitors through diverse marine habitats, from shallow reefs to the deep-sea floor, using traditional graphics, tactile objects, and digital interactives. Each hall offers a distinct sensory experience that aligns with the museum’s interpretive goals.

Technological innovation is central to the realization of these spaces. The design team utilized the architectural heritage of the courtyards, integrating historic specimens into scenographic displays enhanced by intuitive interactive tools. Notably, the sei whale model features a multimedia projection that animates its biology and ecological role, while a central game-based media table in the Evolution Hall demystifies evolutionary processes. These media elements are strategically limited, ensuring they complement rather than overshadow the physical exhibits.

Spanning 660 square metres, the project required a multidisciplinary team, including creative direction by Tim Ventimiglia and contributions from designers, graphic artists, and content developers. The exhibition’s approach prioritizes public understanding of science, moving away from didactic presentations to foster engagement and transparency. Visitors are encouraged to experience the ‘big idea’ of each hall before delving into deeper layers of content, promoting both wonder and comprehension.

Completed at Schloss Rosenstein in Stuttgart and opened to the public in February 2023, the project overcame the challenge of presenting complex scientific topics in an accessible, engaging manner. By demonstrating not only scientific results but also the processes behind discovery, the exhibition underscores the ongoing relevance of natural history collections for research and education. This innovative approach has earned the project the Silver A' Design Award, recognizing its technical excellence and ability to inspire awe and curiosity.

The Naturkundemuseum Stuttgart’s new exhibition halls exemplify how thoughtful design and technology can transform museum experiences, making science accessible, interactive, and deeply memorable for diverse audiences.
