Emotional intelligence is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of healthy childhood development. Moodo, designed by Aishwarya Suresh and Jaylon Tellis, addresses a significant gap in resources for preschoolers by providing an engaging digital tool that supports emotional growth. Inspired by the real-life challenges faced by young children, Moodo offers a fresh approach to emotional education, making it accessible and enjoyable for kids aged five to eight.
At the heart of Moodo lies a unique slider interface, allowing children to explore a spectrum of emotions and their subtle variations. Guided by a friendly robot character, users can identify their feelings and receive personalized coping strategies. The app’s dynamic background shifts to reflect the selected mood, creating an immersive and relatable experience. This reimagining of the traditional emotion wheel ensures that emotional concepts are simplified and tailored for young minds.
The development of Moodo followed a rigorous design thinking process, utilizing Figma for wireframes, high-fidelity screens, and interactive prototypes. The integration of a conversational AI engine, such as GPT models, enables real-time, adaptive dialogues that respond to each child’s unique emotional state. This technology not only enhances user engagement but also provides meaningful, context-aware support as children navigate their feelings.
Research played a pivotal role in shaping Moodo’s features. A literature review on emotional development, coupled with usability studies involving children, informed key design decisions. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, fostering emotional intelligence in early childhood leads to greater self-confidence and well-being. Feedback from young users led to a simplified, child-approved interface that resonates with its target audience.
One of the main challenges in developing Moodo was translating complex emotional concepts into a format that is both accessible and engaging for children. The design team overcame this by focusing on intuitive interactions and visual cues, ensuring that even the youngest users could benefit from the app. The weekly recap feature encourages reflection, helping children track their emotional growth over time.
Moodo stands out as a well-designed, practical, and innovative solution, recognized with the Iron A’ Design Award in 2025 for its contribution to user experience and emotional wellness. By making emotional intelligence approachable, Moodo is poised to positively impact the lives of children and their families worldwide.
