Desen stands out as a modular coffee table collection that draws deeply from the rich visual language of Mediterranean and Ottoman ornamentation. Ruya Akyol’s design process involved extensive research into historical tile motifs and Islamic geometric patterns, resulting in tables that capture the timeless elegance of symmetry and repetition. The collection’s interlocking forms echo traditional artistry while offering a fresh, architectural presence in contemporary spaces.
Each table in the Desen collection is crafted from responsibly sourced Turkish marbles, including Travertine, Karaman Beige, Kale Bordeaux, and Afyon White. The precision-cut shapes are hollowed to reduce weight and material use, ensuring sustainability without sacrificing structural integrity. The recessed tops are carefully milled, providing both a visually refined detail and a practical surface that secures cups and decorative objects.
The modular design allows for endless combinations—tables can be used individually as side tables or grouped in layered arrangements to create dynamic compositions. This flexibility is enhanced by the varying heights (350 mm, 400 mm, and 450 mm), which cater to different functional needs and spatial requirements. The lightweight, hollow construction makes rearrangement effortless, supporting adaptable living environments.
Desen’s architectural aesthetic is further enriched by the natural textures and colors of locally sourced marble, which lend each piece a unique character. The collection’s puzzle-like forms invite interaction, encouraging users to explore new configurations and personalize their spaces. This innovative approach to modular furniture design was recognized with the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2025, celebrating Desen’s technical excellence and artistic vision.
The project, set to debut at Salone Satellite during Salone del Mobile in 2025, exemplifies how traditional influences can be transformed into contemporary luxury. Desen offers a harmonious balance of sculptural form, practical function, and sustainable craftsmanship, making it a standout addition to modern interiors.
Desen’s success demonstrates the enduring appeal of cultural heritage when reimagined through thoughtful design. By merging historical motifs with modular innovation, Ruya Akyol has created a collection that not only elevates everyday living but also celebrates the artistry of the past in a distinctly modern context.
