Harmony: Bridging Heritage and Innovation in Learning Spaces

Historic tea factory transformed into a dynamic cultural classroom

Harmony by Yen Partnership and Miso Soup Design reimagines a century-old tea factory at National Kuan Hsi Senior High School, blending cultural heritage with modern educational innovation for a new generation of learners.

Harmony stands as a testament to the evolving role of educational environments, where history and modernity coexist to inspire learning. Located in Hsinchu, Taiwan, this project revitalizes the historic tea factory of National Kuan Hsi Senior High School, originally established in 1924 with an agricultural mission. The design champions "situational teaching," utilizing flexible spatial arrangements and immersive digital media to support interdisciplinary collaboration and hands-on learning. This approach ensures that the space adapts to diverse educational needs, fostering practical skills and creative problem-solving among students.

The transformation of the tea factory is marked by a careful balance between preservation and innovation. Old tea-processing equipment, once central to the building’s original purpose, is repurposed as striking artistic installations. These elements serve as visual anchors, connecting students and visitors to the school’s rich agricultural heritage. The design team, including Joe Lin and Yenling Chen, prioritized modularity and diversity in spatial planning, allowing classrooms and collaboration zones to be easily reconfigured for various teaching scenarios.

Environmental sustainability is woven into the project through the reuse of historic equipment and furniture, minimizing resource waste and breathing new life into materials that might otherwise be discarded. This thoughtful integration of old and new not only reduces the project’s environmental footprint but also enhances the narrative quality of the space, inviting users to reflect on the relationship between tradition and progress.

One of the project’s most notable achievements is its ability to foster a sense of cultural identity and continuity. By preserving the textures and outlines of historical objects and blending them with contemporary design language, Harmony encourages learners to explore the connections between past and present. The preserved tea-throwing opening, now an artistic installation, exemplifies this dialogue, serving as both a nostalgic symbol and a focal point for creativity.

Harmony’s success has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design in 2025, highlighting its excellence in integrating industry best practices with innovative educational solutions. The project not only honors the legacy of Kuan Hsi Senior High School but also sets a benchmark for future cultural learning spaces that aspire to unite heritage, sustainability, and forward-thinking design.
