Drawing from the clean lines and purposeful forms of mid-century modern design, Rotary Sans stands out with its unique pear drop-shaped ink traps. These features, inspired by classic grotesque and neo-grotesque sans-serifs, not only enhance legibility but also introduce a subtle organic contrast to the typeface’s geometric structure. The result is a font that feels both familiar and refreshingly contemporary, making it suitable for a variety of branding and editorial applications.
Rotary Sans is meticulously crafted as an OpenType sans-serif, offering an extended Latin glyph set, alternative characters, and ligatures. This versatility ensures adaptability across more than 200 Latin-based languages, supporting diverse communication needs in both digital and print environments. The typeface’s multiple weights and styles further expand its usability, allowing for consistent visual identity in different contexts.
The design process began in Italy in late 2023, with extensive research into the balance between geometric precision and functional versatility. Paul Robb and Moira Bartoloni closely studied mid-century typography, aiming to create a typeface that would serve modern branding while retaining the clarity and efficiency of its historical inspirations. Overcoming the challenge of marrying originality with functional clarity, the designers introduced the distinctive ink traps that define Rotary Sans’s character.
To mark its launch in July 2024, a limited-edition specimen box was produced, featuring twenty postcards printed on 300gsm natural paper and a digitally printed, silver-foiled outer box. This presentation was gifted to the first ten companies acquiring the complete typeface family, highlighting Rotary Sans’s versatility and design excellence. The project’s attention to detail and innovative approach were recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its technical mastery and creative achievement.
Rotary Sans exemplifies how thoughtful research, technical innovation, and artistic vision can converge to create a typeface that is both visually striking and highly functional. Its distinctive features and adaptability position it as a valuable asset for designers seeking clarity, consistency, and a touch of modern elegance in their typographic projects.
