Luxury Inn Ambience Redefines Osteopathic Clinic Design

Shunsuke Ohe crafts a tranquil, Japanese-inspired healing space in Osaka.

Tsubomiya, an osteopathic clinic by Shunsuke Ohe, transforms traditional healthcare environments by drawing inspiration from luxury Japanese inns, offering a unique blend of relaxation, culture, and innovative spatial design in the heart of Osaka’s business district.

Located on the first floor of a bustling Osaka building, Tsubomiya stands apart from conventional clinics by immersing visitors in an atmosphere reminiscent of a high-class Japanese inn. Upon entering, guests pass through a noren curtain and are greeted by a serene garden featuring stone lanterns and gravel, immediately transporting them into a tranquil world. The interior palette—subdued grays and blacks complemented by wood-grain walls—creates a calming, sophisticated ambiance, further enhanced by the gentle aroma of incense and soothing Japanese background music.

Shunsuke Ohe’s design philosophy centers on holistic wellness, aiming to heal both body and mind. Unlike the often sterile and utilitarian aesthetics of typical chiropractic clinics in Japan, Tsubomiya’s environment is meticulously curated to promote relaxation and cultural immersion. The clinic’s four private treatment rooms are intentionally dimmer than the entrance and passageways, allowing clients to unwind and rejuvenate in privacy. Indirect lighting and carefully orchestrated light-and-dark contrasts add depth and intimacy to the space.

The realization of this concept involved a thoughtful selection of materials: cloth for the ceiling, a combination of wood and cloth for the walls, and a blend of carpet, PVC tile, and gravel for the flooring. Spanning 63.5 square meters, the clinic’s layout maximizes comfort and privacy while maintaining a seamless flow reminiscent of traditional Japanese hospitality venues.

Research for Tsubomiya revealed a gap in the Japanese healthcare landscape, where most clinics prioritize function over atmosphere. By integrating elements of Japanese culture and design, the clinic not only attracts local businessmen but also appeals to international tourists seeking an authentic, restorative experience. This innovative approach has garnered attention, with many visitors expressing surprise and delight at encountering such a unique space in a medical setting.

Tsubomiya’s success is reflected in its recognition at the 2025 A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award, where it received a Bronze accolade for its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life improvements. The clinic exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate everyday experiences, offering a sanctuary where healing extends beyond the physical to embrace the mind and spirit.

Shunsuke Ohe’s Tsubomiya sets a new standard for healthcare environments, demonstrating the transformative power of design in fostering well-being and cultural appreciation. As more clinics seek to enhance patient experience, this project stands as a compelling model for integrating tradition, innovation, and hospitality in modern urban settings.
