Coexistence and Connection: Redefining Geography Textbooks

Innovative design inspires curiosity and visual engagement in learning.

Kiwook Kim’s “Coexistence and Connection” transforms the traditional high school geography textbook, infusing it with creativity and a message of mutual coexistence to stimulate student curiosity and engagement.

Textbook design has long been associated with standardized layouts and functional, yet uninspiring, visuals. Kiwook Kim’s project, “Coexistence and Connection,” challenges this convention by reimagining the geography textbook as a visually stimulating and intellectually engaging resource. Drawing inspiration from diverse fields, including art, photography, and the physical landscapes that geography seeks to explain, the design aims to foster creativity and curiosity among students.

One of the defining features of this project is its departure from the traditional textbook framework. The covers are adorned with intricate illustrations that reflect the diversity of the spaces people inhabit, echoing the core themes of geography—shape, climate, topography, and culture. These visuals are not merely decorative; they serve as an invitation for students to explore the world’s complexity and the importance of coexistence, aligning with the subject’s educational objectives.

The production process prioritizes both durability and sensory appeal. Utilizing advanced color foil techniques and robust coatings, the textbooks maintain vibrant colors and resist wear from frequent handling. The choice of paper balances lightness for easy portability with a slight gloss to enhance the presentation of maps and illustrations, ensuring that the materials are both practical and visually engaging for high school students.

Collaboration played a pivotal role in the project’s success. The creative team, including illustrator mmmeari, worked closely to align the visual language with the educational content. Overcoming the challenge of breaking away from conventional textbook design, the team’s collective input led to a product that is both functional and artistically rich. This approach demonstrates the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in educational design.

The project’s impact is underscored by its recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, an accolade reserved for designs that demonstrate technical excellence and contribute positively to quality of life. By making geography more accessible and engaging, “Coexistence and Connection” sets a new standard for educational materials, encouraging students to see learning as an exploration of the world’s interconnectedness.

As “Coexistence and Connection” prepares for its introduction into South Korean high schools in 2025, it stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in education. The project not only enhances the learning experience but also inspires a deeper appreciation for the diversity and unity of the spaces people share.
