Kanade Japanese: Crafting Harmony in Liqueur Packaging

Yuko Takagi’s design blends tradition, artistry, and global appeal.

Kanade Japanese, a premium liqueur packaging by Yuko Takagi, captures the essence of Japanese craftsmanship through a harmonious blend of traditional aesthetics and contemporary design, earning international recognition for its innovation and artistry.

Inspired by the delicate, natural flavors of the liqueur itself, Kanade’s packaging evokes the gentle flow of watercolors, symbolizing Japanese subtlety and harmony. Yuko Takagi’s vision translates the sensory experience of the drink into a visual language, using handcrafted textures and organic elements that mirror the product’s smooth sophistication. This approach ensures that the packaging not only protects but also enhances the perception of the liqueur inside.

Distinctive features set Kanade apart in the world of premium spirits. Drawing from Suntory’s renowned whiskey heritage, the design incorporates a Kanji character, aligning with the House of Suntory’s iconic aesthetics. The packaging is tailored for both domestic and international audiences, offering a uniquely Japanese identity that resonates globally. The use of custom washi paper with subtle glossy fibers creates a tactile contrast between matte softness and refined shine, emphasizing the artisanal quality of the product.

The realization of Kanade’s packaging involved meticulous craftsmanship. Each bottle features a handwritten calligraphy logo, a custom typeface, and watercolor paintings that represent individual flavors. This artisanal process highlights the premium positioning of the liqueur, while the technical specifications—such as the 700ml bottle—ensure practicality for both consumers and bartenders. Field testing in bars and direct feedback from bartenders informed design adjustments, resulting in improved usability, ease of pouring, and enhanced tactile elements.

One of the primary challenges faced during development was achieving a balance between a distinctly Japanese design and broad international appeal. The creation of original washi paper that retained its natural texture during printing, with minimal digital intervention, required innovative solutions. The interplay of matte and glossy fibers not only enhances the tactile experience but also reinforces the handcrafted narrative central to the brand’s identity.

The final design for Kanade bridges traditional Japanese artistry with modern sensibilities. Watercolor illustrations and handwritten calligraphy evoke a sense of authenticity, while the custom typeface offers a contemporary touch. This fusion of past and present has garnered Kanade the prestigious Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, recognizing its outstanding technical execution and creative excellence.

Kanade Japanese stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in elevating everyday experiences, inviting consumers worldwide to savor both the taste and artistry of Japanese liqueur culture.
