JourneyLink: Redefining Group Road Trips with Smart Coordination

Seamless multi-vehicle infotainment for safer, connected travel experiences

JourneyLink, designed by Yan Zeng, Ruifeng Wang, and Yuyin Sun, introduces a groundbreaking approach to group road trips by enabling real-time coordination and communication across multiple vehicles, transforming the way families and friends travel together.

Coordinating group road trips has long posed challenges, from keeping convoys together to managing spontaneous route changes. JourneyLink addresses these issues by leveraging advanced Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication, allowing multiple cars to sync routes, share live updates, and coordinate stops in real time. This innovation not only enhances safety but also fosters a more connected and enjoyable travel experience for all participants.

Unlike traditional navigation apps, JourneyLink’s unique features include integrated emergency alerts, collaborative navigation, and a card-based user interface optimized for driver accessibility. The system’s prioritized notification mechanism ensures that only the most urgent alerts are displayed, minimizing distractions and supporting safer driving. Voice and text communication tools further streamline group coordination, while the ability to capture and share scenic moments adds a memorable dimension to road trips.

Developed using Human Machine Interface (HMI) principles, JourneyLink underwent rigorous user research, including surveys and interviews with road trip experts, as well as usability testing with real participants. This iterative process led to a user-friendly design that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ensuring cross-platform compatibility and smooth data synchronization across diverse vehicle infotainment systems.

Technical challenges, such as ensuring reliable data transmission and maintaining a distraction-free interface, were overcome through extensive prototyping and testing. The result is a robust infotainment application that balances real-time updates with driver safety, making group travel more efficient and enjoyable. By emphasizing accessibility and information hierarchy, the design supports seamless operation even in fast-paced driving environments.

JourneyLink’s impact has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in Interface, Interaction, and User Experience Design for 2025. This accolade highlights the system’s role in advancing connected vehicle technology and redefining the group travel experience for a new era of smart, collaborative road trips.

As group travel becomes increasingly popular, JourneyLink sets a new standard for in-car infotainment, offering a glimpse into the future of connected driving and shared adventures on the road.
