Pavilion by Dome + Partners Redefines Urban Living in Erbil

Innovative masterplan opens community spaces and sets new sustainability standards.

In a region where gated communities often limit public access, Pavilion distinguishes itself by opening all social areas—sports, green, and cultural zones—to the entire city. This approach fosters communication, equity, and integration, setting a new benchmark for large-scale developments in Iraq. Dome + Partners drew inspiration from Erbil’s rich heritage and the urgent need for updated facilities, aiming to create a vibrant, accessible environment for residents and visitors alike.

The project’s scale is impressive, featuring 768 residential villas, four mixed-use towers, 40 residential buildings, a 160,000-square-meter shopping mall, a 285,000-square-meter lagoon, and 333,000 square meters of green spaces. These elements are carefully designed to accommodate Erbil’s fast-growing population and to support a modern, sustainable lifestyle. The masterplan seamlessly blends residential, commercial, and cultural functions, ensuring that every aspect of daily life is considered.

Sustainability is at the heart of Pavilion’s realization. The development incorporates high-performance insulation, energy-efficient windows, and advanced HVAC systems to minimize energy consumption. Renewable energy sources, including solar panels and geothermal systems, further reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Water conservation is addressed through rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and efficient irrigation, all of which contribute to the project’s eco-friendly credentials.

Walkability is a central feature, reducing vehicle emissions and promoting healthier lifestyles. The integration of natural elements, such as expansive green spaces and a large lagoon, enhances well-being and encourages community interaction. The design research emphasized the use of eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient strategies, resulting in spaces that are both elegant and comfortable.

Overcoming the challenge of balancing sustainability with comfort required meticulous planning and collaboration among architects, engineers, and contractors. The result is a development that not only meets international standards but also reflects local culture and aspirations. Pavilion’s anticipated impact includes boosting tourism, creating jobs, and serving as a model for future sustainable projects in the region.
