VeriSure: Transforming HIV Self-Testing with Digital Support

HIV self-testing has long been overshadowed by stigma, anxiety, and uncertainty. Many individuals delay or avoid testing due to fear of results and a lack of guidance. VeriSure, a digital HIV Testing Assistant, directly tackles these barriers by providing a comprehensive, user-centered mobile experience. The app’s design is rooted in extensive research, including user interviews and expert consultations, which highlighted the need for emotional support and clear instructions during the self-testing journey.

Unlike traditional self-test kits, VeriSure offers step-by-step animated 3D video instructions, a calming pre-test feature, and straightforward result interpretation. The app also connects users to nearby clinics through an integrated map and sends customizable reminders to encourage regular testing. These features are crafted to reduce stress and empower users, transforming self-testing into a seamless and reassuring process.

Privacy and accessibility are at the core of VeriSure’s design. The mobile application is optimized for iOS and adapts to various screen sizes, ensuring a smooth experience across devices. The underlying technology leverages secure data management and a user-friendly interface, developed with tools such as Figma, Rhino, and Flutter. The HIV test kit itself uses an oral specimen collection device, approved for multiple specimen types, making it suitable for both clinical and non-clinical environments.

Ziwei Liu’s approach to design extends beyond technical innovation. By prioritizing emotional well-being and user empowerment, VeriSure addresses the psychological barriers that often accompany HIV testing. The app’s educational resources, calming features, and easy access to follow-up care collectively foster a supportive environment, helping to reduce stigma and promote early diagnosis.
