Zhilan Hotel: Where Industrial Heritage Meets Green Innovation

A sustainable hotel blending history, ecology, and smart technology

Located in Shenyang’s Hunnan District, Zhilan Hotel stands as a testament to adaptive reuse, transforming a former factory into a pioneering sustainable hospitality destination. The project’s vision draws from the desire to blend industrial heritage with ecological principles, creating a space where the past and future coexist. With its proximity to major urban landmarks and transport links, the hotel is positioned as a vibrant urban node, attracting both local and international visitors seeking a unique, environmentally conscious stay.

Central to Zhilan’s design is the integration of a large-scale water purification system that collects and recycles wastewater and natural sources. This system not only supports the hotel’s lush greenery and landscaped terraces but also visually educates guests about the water cycle through a transparent, modular purifier. The original steel frame is preserved and repurposed in furniture and art installations, maintaining the site’s industrial character while infusing it with renewed vitality and purpose.

Energy efficiency and smart technology are at the core of the hotel’s operations. Intelligent lighting and climate control systems respond to natural conditions, optimizing comfort while minimizing energy use. The regenerative facade, constructed from energy-saving materials with superior mechanical and thermal properties, provides both protection and efficiency. These features collectively foster a self-sustaining ecosystem, reducing environmental impact and operational costs.

The design process involved a mixed-method exploratory study, combining field research, community engagement, and advanced digital simulations. Insights from designers, engineers, and local residents informed the harmonious integration of history and eco-technology. The result is a space that not only enhances user experience but also strengthens social cohesion and business viability, setting a new standard for sustainable urban development.

Zhilan Hotel’s transformation was not without challenges. The project team navigated the complexities of preserving industrial heritage while meeting modern sustainability standards, overcoming regulatory and technical hurdles through innovative problem-solving. This achievement was recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating the hotel’s creative ingenuity and its contribution to quality of life improvements.
