Waves of Light: Waterscape Colab Office by Moriyuki Ochiai

Aluminum ceiling waves inspire creativity in Tokyo’s shared workspace

Moriyuki Ochiai Architects reimagines the shared office environment in Tokyo with Waterscape Colab, drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese craftsmanship and the natural play of light on water.

Waterscape Colab with Jpre, designed by Moriyuki Ochiai Architects, stands as a testament to the fusion of tradition and innovation in contemporary office design. Located in Gotanda, Tokyo, this 800-square-meter shared office space brings together Japanese manufacturing companies, fostering collaboration and cultural exchange. The design draws on the district’s agricultural heritage and the ingenuity of Japanese crafts such as kimono making, origami, and furoshiki, all of which transform simple materials into objects of beauty and utility.

The office’s defining feature is a single aluminum sheet that sweeps across the ceiling, forming undulating metallic waves. These waves reflect and refract natural light, creating an ever-changing atmosphere reminiscent of sunlight glimmering on rice paddies. The ceiling’s dynamic form not only enhances the visual experience but also delineates different zones within the office, each tailored to specific functions—dynamic movement in the entrance, calm openness in work areas, and intimate ambiance in the bar and kitchen spaces.

This innovative approach to spatial design is both aesthetic and functional. The overlapping aluminum waves create varying ceiling heights, promoting both interaction and concentration. The interplay of natural light and metallic surfaces ensures that the environment evolves throughout the day, offering a poetic rhythm that inspires artisans and entrepreneurs alike. According to Moriyuki Ochiai Architects, the design aims to “produce a mysterious radiance imbued with profound depth that enhances the enjoyment and pleasure of artisans engaged in creative activities.”

Sustainability is integral to the project. The architects utilized recycled aluminum sheets and developed a modular assembly system, allowing the ceiling components to be disassembled and relocated as needed. This not only reduces waste but also minimizes the cost and environmental impact of moving the business, reflecting a thoughtful approach to resource management.

Waterscape Colab’s unique blend of traditional inspiration, innovative use of materials, and commitment to sustainability has earned it the Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design for 2025. The project exemplifies how thoughtful design can create environments that nurture creativity, honor cultural heritage, and adapt to the evolving needs of modern workspaces.

By harmonizing artistry, technology, and sustainability, Moriyuki Ochiai Architects offers a compelling vision for the future of collaborative work environments—one where every detail, from the shimmer of aluminum waves to the flow of natural light, contributes to a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere.
