Fairy Tale Travel, a project led by Kiwook Kim and a talented creative team, introduces a refreshing approach to educational materials for Korean elementary students. Unlike conventional textbooks, which often lack narrative cohesion, this design draws inspiration from the engaging world of fairy tales. The concept emerged from the idea that learning could become more enjoyable and accessible if textbooks mirrored the charm and continuity of storybooks commonly found in bookstores. The result is a textbook that students are eager to own, much like a beautifully illustrated fairy tale.
What sets Fairy Tale Travel apart is its commitment to consistency and engagement through storytelling. Each textbook is crafted with a fairy tale book structure, featuring friendly character guides who accompany students on their educational journey. These characters not only stimulate curiosity but also help maintain interest throughout the lessons. The design utilizes warm hand-drawn illustrations, playful typography, and gentle curves, creating a visually inviting and approachable atmosphere tailored for young learners.
Innovation extends beyond aesthetics to practical features. The textbooks prioritize convenience and usability, with distinct main colors for each grade and semester, enabling quick identification of materials. The covers feature holographic elements to evoke the imaginative spirit of fairy tales, while advanced antiviral printing technologies ensure safety through antimicrobial coatings and inks. An integrated activity pocket further supports hands-on learning, allowing students to organize and engage with various activities seamlessly.
Research for Fairy Tale Travel focused on transforming the ordinary learning experience into an adventure. By infusing everyday lessons with elements of exploration and imagination, the design encourages children to see their textbooks as gateways to new worlds. This approach not only supports academic growth but also nurtures creativity and personal storytelling, making the learning process both memorable and meaningful.
The project’s development, spanning from March 2023 to March 2024, involved overcoming significant creative and technical challenges. Establishing a consistent narrative structure required close collaboration between designers and editors, especially given the novelty of applying fairy tale storytelling to educational content. The team’s dedication resulted in a product that stands out for its originality and effectiveness.
Fairy Tale Travel has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in Education, Teaching Aid, and Training Content Design for 2025, celebrating its technical excellence, artistic innovation, and positive impact on young learners. By turning textbooks into cherished storybooks, this project sets a new standard for educational design, inspiring wonder and enthusiasm in the classroom.
