Shining Moments: Redefining the Korean Textbook Experience

Comic-Inspired Covers Foster Curiosity and Emotional Connection

Kiwook Kim’s “Shining Moments” transforms the traditional Korean middle school textbook into a vibrant, comic book-inspired journey, designed to spark curiosity and emotional warmth among students.

“Shining Moments” stands as a groundbreaking project in educational design, led by Kiwook Kim and a talented creative team. The initiative reimagines the standard textbook, moving away from conventional subject-based graphics to embrace illustrations reminiscent of comic books. The covers capture everyday scenes of friendship and daily life, aiming to make textbooks less intimidating and more inviting for middle school students in Korea. This approach reflects a broader trend in educational design, where emotional resonance and relatability are prioritized to enhance learning engagement.

The unique visual language of “Shining Moments” is rooted in analog illustration, featuring soft colors and intentionally incomplete details. This style not only appeals to students’ tastes but also bridges generational gaps, offering nostalgia for teachers and fresh experiences for children. The covers utilize advanced printing techniques, including holographic and colored foils, as well as silk epoxy, to create dynamic, tactile effects. Bright Pantone colors on the spine and select sections further ensure the books stand out, reinforcing their identity as objects of curiosity rather than obligation.

Research for the project focused on the emotional impact of daily life scenes and friendships depicted in the illustrations. By prioritizing warmth and familiarity, the design encourages students to form a positive association with their textbooks. According to the design team, this strategy helps reduce academic pressure and fosters a sense of security, making learning a more enjoyable and meaningful experience. The covers serve as a visual message that ordinary experiences and friendships are central to personal growth and education.

One of the primary challenges faced during the development of “Shining Moments” was overcoming skepticism from those accustomed to traditional textbook aesthetics. The absence of subject-specific symbols initially raised concerns about clarity and relevance. However, the final design successfully demonstrates that student engagement can be heightened through visual storytelling and humor, rather than rigid symbolism. The result is a collection of twelve books, each tailored to its subject while maintaining a cohesive, inviting aesthetic.

“Shining Moments” has garnered international recognition, winning the Golden A' Design Award in 2025 for its innovative approach to educational content. The project exemplifies how thoughtful design can advance both art and education, setting a new standard for textbooks that inspire curiosity, empathy, and a lifelong love of learning.

As Korean middle schools prepare to adopt these textbooks in 2025, “Shining Moments” stands as a testament to the power of design in shaping positive educational experiences and nurturing the next generation of learners.
